Even with the cheaper natural gas rates, I paid about $550 total for the gas + electricity. Our house is little bigger, newer and has 2x6 construction.

People should NOT be comparing their electric utility bill with OP unless they account for the heating aspect.

I do get chuckle when our resident California guy chimes in saying that his heating for two and half years is less than OP's one month Anybody from Houston wants to one up on him??

Not exactly Houston, and I can't one-up him, but for comparison...

My bill last month was ~$163. 2200 sq ft two story house that we keep at 71 degrees when the heater is on.

augment with electric heat in room.
2200 sqft ranch
$340 heating bill of which $110 was electric.
I am working on a cheap wind generator to use as a 12v heater in my bedroom

We have low utilities bills because we have mild weather in So Cal and we set thermostat at low 60-62 in winter and 80-82 in summer, the furnace is rarely on in winter and so is the A/C in summer.

My bill last month was $94. To be honest the kero heater helped a lot. Without it the bill would have been $95. Only cost $30 in kero for those savings.

I know; when rest of us are talking about 6 feet snow drifts, we always hear from the chosen ones on how they had to turn on the A/C to go to sleep. Somebody has mastered the art of pouring salt on a bleeding wound
Now that we have had two days of over freezing temperatures, we think we have finally came out of the insane weather pattern. Some of the weathermen are disappointed that we might miss the all time record unless we get another storm. We can handle more but only after twenty feet snow mountains are all melted first.

If the supplier is First Energy they are VERY well known to rip off anyone all the time / anytime , They got to get extra money somehow to pay for the First Energy Stadium ( 50 years of rebuilding Browns ) Which is just as much as a joke as global warming for any of this deep freeze we all had the past years

What does a 1 bedroom apartment rent for there. About $2500?.

I don't know how to answer these distortions. I'll stay away from GW. You do realize that in 2012 that First Energy paid for naming rights for the stadium. An tiny tiny portion of building the stadium lol. I use FE as a suplier bc their rates are the lowest.

My brother in law lives in Kirkland in a fairly large house, but it is built in the early '90's I believe.

It is fully electric, baseboards and hot water tank etc.

We have Hydro Quebec, not exactly cheap, but historically supposed to be cheap dam generated electricity.

Well, he has been getting billed 750$ CDN a month for the cold months.

This has been a very cold Winter, so I think your bills are "normal".

I have an old condo where the neighbors heat a lot as they are older people, so I left the heating off expecting high bills.

I turned the baseboards down to 15C, so they never came on even once.

My bedroom was always above 20C, I think it fell to 19C two or three times, but I wear polar fleece, very heavy jogging pants etc.

I only paid 21$ a month as the minimum charge to hold a Hydro Quebec account, so it is very doable.

I work all day, so I really enjoy a nice warm work day, and when I go home I let the computer heat up my office with the door shut.

So, there are ways to cut back on expenses, such as living in apartments etc.

I could never afford a wallowing shack, it isn't me, it is just the power companies have been allowed to gouge in North America, it is a new reality.

Maybe he should live in a small, brand new Condo at his age? What are his needs?

A 2-bedroom apartment next to University High School in Irvine is $2800/mo.

An average 40-50 years old house(need some remodeling) in Turtle Rock area (zip code 92603) is appraised at around $500-550/sq-ft, it can be as high as $700-800/sq-ft if the house has some view.

Utilities bills are very low but other bills(mortgage of $0.5-1 mil, property tax, association dues, income tax ...) are fairly high.

230kW per day is out of this world, IMO.

Definitely needs to dig down to the bottom of this matter (yourself).

My typical consumption at this time of the year (Mar, 15, outside temp is between 2C and 12C daytime), with an oil-filled radiant electric heater to supplement my master bedroom (set to 500W) every morning between 4:30am and 6:30am), works out to avg. between 12~18kW per day (sometimes higher---20+kW/day due to washer and electric dryer load).

You guys have crazy rents in Ohio!!

My pay is considered low, my last apartment after selling a house was 930$ a month, had to rent the hot water tank, and the heating wasn't included.

I think the heating was reasonable, but I guess if you include our income and sales taxes in Quebec, the rents here are the same as yours.

Buying a small condo and throwing away all my junk is what I would do if it isn't the meter that is faulty.

I hope it's the meter!!!
