Insane CA DMV Registration Tax

I pay $50 annual registration for each of my three F350s.

If I lived in California, I suspect I would be moving out of state. Sorry that is happening to you. I can't even imagine a state with the highest population and many roads that are not subject to extreme weather conditions could have such a pricey annual registration.

For the record I love California- but something seems very wrong with the registration fees.

$2,085 in personal property tax for a 2021 Suburban and a 2023 Tesla Model Y here plus whatever registration is, $30 a year or so, plus another $110 for the EV sticker. It’ll go up next year when the 2024 Yukon XL hits as the replacement for the Burb.

A whole, whole lot of taxes put on people. It all adds up.

Yes, it does. Problem is, government are two of my first neighbors. Both deputy Sheriffs. And people constantly refuse ballot measures to have new police academy, raise salaries to both sheriff dept. And PD, bcs. government. They also complain why we don’t have enough LEO.

Our registration includes property tax. $500 is not a lot for 2021 Highlander Hybrid.
I own property in San Diego and for example real estate tax is cheaper than my property in Colorado and especially one in Chicago. Cheaper as % of value.
CA gained population last year as a lot of people realized that grass is not always greener on other side.

Here in Kentucky you pay some magic number from a book they have showing vehicle values. My old 65 VW Bug costs more than my wife's Madza 5 that's a 2012 model. We bought a used 99 LTV camper van and the charge to get a license plate was $1600+.

In Hawaii you pay by weight. Age doesn't matter. So... 15 years ago an 80's Toyota was about $300 in Hawaii and $80 in California.

I once had a Corolla Hybrid and didn't like the $100 additional tax. I pay $61.59 in Ohio for each car. I don't own a truck but 1/2 ton non commercial use trucks are $15 additional. 3/4-1 ton trucks are $50 more. EV's are $200 more and plug-in hybrids are $150 more.

My dad (lives in CA) has a Dodge pickup that peaked at $601 one year. Insane. But he pays $3700 a year in property taxes on a 900k property. Mine is worth a third of that and I'm over $9k a year. They all get you. One way or another.

You guys in the US (in some states?) pay an annual (?) vehicle registraion fee that's based on the vehicle value? That's crazy. I don't get why some of these comments bring real estate property tax into the discussion.

Here in Ontario Canada the annual (or once ever 2-year) vehicle registration fee has been dropped now for 2 years and it's not coming back. No more license plate stickers. You need to register on-line once every year or two, and you need to have valid liability insurance active on the vehicle for the registration to go through.

A lot of cops now have LPR's (license plate readers) on their cars, they can perform instant license plate checks and will alert a cop if a nearby plate doesn't have insurance. That's the theory, but i think they look for plates that are not in their system as being registered, or stolen, not necessarily that the insurance is up to date.

We have handicapped plates on both vehicles for my wife . I don't remember what the registration costs but it's next to nothing . Probably less than 50 bucks .

Your dad's been in that house for a while. my property tax is higher for property value that's lower. Prop 13 holds them to a max of 2% yearly increase in property tax. It stabilizes the budget as there aren't huge swings with tax as property values swing up/down, as has happened in several parts of CA. It's also great for those on a fixed income as they were losing their homes in the 70's with giant property tax increases.

Your dad is under prop 13 which limits the % property tax increases each year. Most homeowners in CA aren’t under prop 13 and pay ~ 1% assessed value per year which fluctuates wildly. Prop 13 needs to be repealed as it is discriminatory and unfair.

All CA homeowners fall under Prop13 whether they realize it or not. Stay in your home longer & it begins to pay off.

In some states yes. In Illinois, you pay by type of plate so all passenger and sport utility gets normal plates @ $165-ish/year and electric cars at $250.

Look up what it costs to register a vehicle in Colorado. You just might be happy with what you pay in California.
