Does the dmv not update on the weekend?

In Ohio, I've been renewing online for a couple years and they've gotten much better (faster). For the past ~2-3 years, I do it online and the new stickers arrive by mail within about a week. I do remember a number of years previously that it took many weeks, to the point that I was concerned it wouldn't arrive on time. I contacted the BMV and they confirmed it was paid for and processed and "in the mail". They offered to email me a letter to keep in the car in case it didn't arrive in time and I happened to get pulled over for something.

As far as the physical BMV locations, they vary from fast and efficient to slow, rude, and hate-their-job employees. Luckily, the one closest to home and work is an excellent location....or was when I last went. I do the mail-order option purely for the convenience.

Ohio has "vending" machines where you can renew your registration. One such machine is in a Meijer's store near me. I have never used it only because of a small extra charge for the convivence of using it. I believe doing it by mail or online also incurs an extra charge? I am retired and just go to the DMV where there is usually no wait and the people are pretty helpful and friendly ( so far anyhow, LOL!)

The DMV in Illinois barely works during the week... I do everything possible online so that I don't have to deal with them, ever.

Quoted for emphasis. The Illinois DMV (we call it the Secretary of State here) is a total quagmire.

I needed to transfer a title a couple years ago. I tried going to the nearest office since its just a couple miles from my workplace. I gave up when I got there and found a line a mile long, stretching way out the door and into the parking lot. So I went back again on Saturday, which turned out to be July 1 and I found they were closed so the old ladies there could have a four-day weekend. I tried again the following Saturday and found an even longer line than the first time. I came back again on a Thursday or a Friday and the line wasn't too bad, until I got into the little room which had about 70 people waiting in line and a big sign on the wall that said "Max. Occupancy 30 Persons". Another sign claimed "Fees Accepted by Check or Money Order Only, NO Credit Cards" like its still 1970..... So I had to come back the following week with my checkbook.

Maybe I could have done it online, but I'm not sure.

Never seen anything like that. Oddly enough, each BMV location is actually independently operated so these vending machines might only be operated by a specific deputy registrar.

Nope. You still have to pay the 'local' deputy registrar "commission" though. I'm cheap enough that if it did cost extra - well, within reason - I'd just go to the BMV office.

I noticed this time they gave the usual $1.00 discount for paying online, but then later on they added like $2.xx for a convenience fee

I just ordered a replacement registration for one of my cars, and renewed registrations on my 2 trailers. Did all 3 on-line on a weekend. In all three cases, the NY DMV immediately emailed me a printable PDF with a temporary registration, and the real one arrives in the mail 7-10 days later. So you have proof in your hands almost instantly.
