Insane CA DMV Registration Tax

In Calif it’s based on the sale price. All get cheaper year by year by year. It gets to like $150 after 10 years or something. That’s what I pay on my truck but it has a commercial license so is a little higher than a passenger vehicle.
So $500 only means it was pretty expensive.

Was expecting something insane. Calif had $540 red light cam tix, so the fee didn't strike me as such.

Aren't we forgetting that MA/CT/VA/NH charge for lack of the official term, annual property taxes on vehicles, that exceed the number shown? Here in PA it's gone up from $38 to $50 which I think is not justified, but with so many vehicles driving around unregistered in Phila., I can see the need to recoup revenue that's been lost.
A 2 year old high mileage truck and a 5 year old truck. $1200 for both in Missouri. Was $1800 2 years ago. You have to pay it every single year, and it goes down based on the value of the truck minus any high mileage adjustments.

That's asinine to me. Are the roads at least well taken care of?

I move to CA in 99 and brought 2 vehicles with me. They charged an out of state fee that I can’t recall now, but was over the top for sure.

Thankfully it was determined to be an illegal fee and I was refunded later.

My move to IA yielded much worse registration fees as well as much higher insurance rates. Our property tax is high as well, double what I paid in CA for double the house, though my house would be $1M in CA. Quality of life here is much better.

The nice thing is I don’t have to smog and a 10 year old vehicle is only $50 to renew.
Oh yes! The old smog impact fee! I had to fill out forms to get refunded the $300 smog impact fee for a pickup that I bought locally from a guy who just moved in from Colorado. California did not want to refund the fee, but the courts ruled that the fee was to be refunded. Lots of hoops to jump through.

Every state needs money and will use different ways to achieve the goal. If it wasn’t for prop 13, lots of folks would be taxed out of their own homes. Real estate prices are pretty high in the coastal regions.

I am happier in New Hampshire, but my skill set is less valuable here. I was ready to slow down though.

The roads are good, gas is cheap, and insurance is reasonable. However, paying an additional $3-5,000 over the ownership of your vehicle seems a big much.
The California roads are terrible! A friend of mine lives on a street that so bad it's smoother to drive the dirt shoulder.

The little town of Nipton,ca has bad road until the NV state line where it gets good.

I pay $50 annual registration for each of my three F350s.

If I lived in California, I suspect I would be moving out of state. Sorry that is happening to you. I can't even imagine a state with the highest population and many roads that are not subject to extreme weather conditions could have such a pricey annual registration.

For the record I love California- but something seems very wrong with the registration fees.
I’m kinda surprised that they haven’t made their new tourism videos say something like, “California: it used to be a great place to live. Now, it’s as good a place as any to visit!”

Sad too, because overall the weather even up by Sac is mild in winter and the sights & parks are great year-round (when you can get to some of them). I know that’s the 10k’ view, and no disrespect to anyone who does live in CA. But the differences from even my only-semi-backwards state of IN would be intolerable for me. I’ll come visit you guys (just missed @slo town a few years back when I saw Hearst Castle) and be happy both coming and leaving.

BTW I’m paying $298 for a ‘19 F-150 XL and $257 for a ‘19 Ascent Touring… you do that math and figure out how it makes sense. My ‘07 Impreza is like $25 excise and $15 local & county, so at least that’s reasonable.

Just spent $198 for a 66 Bronco registration. Cheapest in the household.
