Input needed, kumho, general, or Firestone

I'm looking for a new set of 30x9.5 r15 for my Jeep Cherokee.

I'm looking to build my xj into a camping/expedition rig, and it's my DD, so it does need manners, although not much.

What it does need to handle is snow and ice.

There are three tires in my range, kumho road venture at51, general grabber at2, and Firestone destination a/t.

Does anyone have any input for these choices?
 
I vote for Firestone Destination LE for mostly highway. Destination AT for off roading.

I do not have these, but have heard and read good things.

The General Grabber AT2 is severe snow rated in your size. I also know a few people that run these in Winter in a heavy snowfall area, and they speak highly of them.
 
I would vote the Destination AT as well. The Kumho looks decent and has good reviews, but it's a newer tire so it could still end up being a dud in the long term.

They seem to do better in snow/ice but the firestone have a little better rating for rain. The firestone have a more tight tread so that would explain why its a little lower in snow/ice but better for rain and also noise.

So I would vote for either the more aggressive Kumho or more quiet Firestone. Both should work fine just need to decide if giving up a little of one thing is worth it for another.
 
I installed 33" Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my F150 and they have been awesome! They are in your price range for the size and I highly recommend them.
 
The Yokohama Geolander A/T-S is another option in this price range and size, and would be the one that gets my nod.
 
Never used them as truck tires, but I have always had good luck with Kumho tires on street cars/weekend warriors. Good for the price.
 
Firestone Destination A/T I have had them on my Jeep Cherokee and my Ford Escape. They were as good on road as off.
 
I have the General AT2's on my F150, my dad has them on his F150and a buddy had them on a Chevy K1500. So far we've all agreed they get good traction in all conditions you'd expect an AT to perform in. None of us are the type to dive off into a mud hole but for any off roading done to get to hunting sites or general farm use they've been great!

They do however throw rocks going down gravel roads. The set on the Chevy didn't last too long. 30k if I remember right. Mine are on pace to last significantly longer than that so driving habits may have been the issue there.
 
I've been looking at reviews on all three...

The kumhos seem to be close to a hybrid tire, half a/t and half m/t. There just isn't much in the way of reviews.
That might be too aggressive for my needs, but they look cool.

Everyone here loves general tires, and I like how they seem to copy the best parts of the bfgs, but the bfgs usually are mediocre in mud/ice/snow and I wonder if they fall in line...

The destination a/t, are very similar to the tires I had on my old jeep, dayton Timberline 2 (in fact they were made for dayton by Firestone) I liked those tires and so does everyone else... but they don't look meaty ya know?

Anyway I currently drive like 8k a year with maybe 20% off tarmac so ice and snow are bigger on my needs list, especially without any abs,tcs,ecs,yaw,etc

I've looked into Cooper, but Ive been given $500 as a hard ceiling,i am able to mount my own, and that pushes above that

I do like Yokohama, but I've been burned by geolanders before

I can get Hercules Terra trac 2 for a little cheaper through work, but I'd rather get the Firestone's for the money

I will probably get the Firestone's unless I hear compelling arguments for something else

Same tire I use. Highly recommended.
 
It's worth a couple extra bucks to up to the BF Goodrich All Terrains IMO.

My Jeep is on it's 2nd set of them in 9 years. Lots of off-roading with them and they have held up awesome.
 
I don't know if they have in your size but the pirelli scorpion atr is a good on/off road tire. I have them on my ext. From the 3 you are inquiring about, I only have experience w the kuhmo rv. If it priced better than the other 2, that's what I would get

This is the tire I have on my truck, and they are just "ok" IMHO. Not that great of off road traction...I have spun them just idling up a slight hill on wet grass. They do have good road manners though, and decent snow traction.

From the tire you listed I would rank them in this order, from my top choice to bottom. I would normally go with the Kumho as #1, as I have been pleased with every Kumho set of tires I have purchased, but in this instance I would probably go with the Generals as they have the severe snow rating.

1 - General
2 - Kumho




3 - Firestone (I have NEVER had good luck with Firestone tires)
 
I believe they all have good reviews.


the general AT2 is a nice aggressive looking tread design and will probably be like a bfg at in the snow they usually do well.

the destinations are usually a good rated tire regardless of if its an AT or highway tire etc.


have you looked cooper tire at all?

just curious
