Inline tranny filter questions

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4wd V6 with auto. It has about 4500 miles on it and want it to last.

I just bought a Hayden 678 cooler and plan on mounting it within the next couple of months. I tow fairly frequent (1500-2000lbs but only about 20-40 miles total distance 1-2/week). I want to get an inline filter as well.

I have been looking at magnefine, but wondering what the best would be.

Question: When I get transmission flushes done, do I leave filter on there or what?

Doesn't Toyota offers some kind of factory towing option? I think they offer something like that. I'm not sure about Tacoma, but on other makes/models towing option includes transmission and PS cooler as well as some other mods. I suggest talking to a dealership if they can set up factory kit. If cooler is installed by anyone else other than dealer using Toyota hardware you'll definately void your warranty. With only 4.5k miles I wound't risk it. If transmission goes after 10k miles because of factory defect you'll have to pay for it.

If Toyota doesn't offer towing package I suggest you just change your ATF every 15-20k miles. That should keep transmission very safe especially that you tow only 1500-2000 lbs. You might want to change front and rear differential oil at 5k-10k miles, as well as transfer case oil.

Good idea with the big cooler. Every auto transmission car I own has one.

Its nice to go with SS lines and AN fittings if you can afford them, otherwise just regular rubber isn't bad.

To answer your question about the magnefine, you run it inline with your rubber cooler line (or stainless). There is an arrow on the magnefine which should be pointed the same was as the flow of fluid.

The magnefine says replace every 15k miles, you simply throw the old one out and install a new one. I use some hose clamps.

They make a stainless race model magnefine, that you can hook AN lines up to, but I dont' have the kind of money for race car plumbing.

Yes Toyota offers a towing package. The only contents transmission wise is a line that actually runs into the radiator.

BTW: Installing a cooler and inline filter will not void my warranty unless the failure is caused by one of those added components.

i personally like magnefine, 20 bucks on ebay...

and about voiding warrenty...yes maybe but as Scooby said thats probably the issue.

id rather say screw warrenty for now and get that transmission running cooler....then when something goes wrong transmission wise take out the modifications and take it in for the warrenty =)

I've got a 2004 Tundra that I tow with. I looked at the magnefine and the filtran, ended up buying a Racor remote mount filter that is a spin on type. Ran me about $95 but supposedly does a good job of filtering, and the filter only has to be replaced at 50K or so. I haven't installed it yet, but plan to soon and switch to Amsoil synthetic fluid.

Our principal auto trans rebuilder [we usually farm out auto rblds] always gives an inline filter back with the rblt trans, and won't warranty it if we don't put in on.
I'm a believer in these inline filters and supplemental coolers, even if you don't tow anything.
The speed of a chemical reaction doubles every 17 deg F, so if you can get your transmission fluid down by 25 deg, you quadruple it's life [at least that aspect of the fluid].

I got mine from www.lubespecialist.com from a guy named Greg. It isn't listed on his site, but you can ask him for it. He carries other Racor stuff for diesels. I had ordered Amsoil stuff from him before, and saw he carried some Racor stuff, so I asked. The closest other price I found was something like 108.
