In spirit of the "70's speaker vs. now" thread...

I just ordered the Q150 yesterday since Best Buy had them on sale. This will be my first ever pair of KEFs - for my desktop setup, to replace some older PSB Alpha B bookshelves. They're fairly deep. I hope they don't look too out of place on my desk. The Uni-Q driver array should be good for nearfield listening.

They're way different than the late 80s/early 90s version. That had a soft dome tweeter and no cage. The driver was absolutely independent of the tweeter although I'm not sure what it looks like under the cage of the newer version.

It looks complicated.

Not a speaker score, but certainly home audio related. Best "score" I've come across was when Goodwill Online shipped me a pretty decent used receiver (Sony STR-DA7ES) by mistake, instead of the $10 tape deck I'd ordered.

At the time I was looking to upgrade to an HDMI-equipped receiver, but I quickly abandoned that idea when I received the Sony, which was in near-mint condition. Despite not having HDMI, it's a powerhouse (at almost 50lbs, it should be) and has 6 digital inputs (4 of which are optical), which is way more than I need.

The best part is that Goodwill refunded my money and apologized for their "mistake" and let me keep the receiver. I'm still thanking them to this day.

Wow, that is a pretty good amp for $10! lol 7 channels at 120w rms with full range?
I got a Goodwill JVC Rx-6042 receive for $20 and its 5x100w rms but only at 1000Hz?... In stereo mode its 100w rms x 2 full range which is pretty decent IMO. I just have a pair of $5 Goodwill Sound Dynamics R85's (one had the rear port tube knocked into the speaker) which match up pretty well with the amp and do full range for me.

The first generation Uni-Q driver wasn't really about the tweeter, which was a pretty standard (but high quality) silk dome design mounted in a funky chassis that worked with the driver. What made it work was the driver design with a funky cone without a dust cap and using a different kind of magnet.

I used to be stereo crazy; it is soooo easy to spiral up in price with diminishing returns in quality.
I settled on Monitor Audio speakers and could not be more pleased.
Of course, quality sound ALWAYS starts with a quality source.
Build a balanced system or you will never get the benefit of a quality set of speakers.
Overkill is underestimated.

Before I enlisted in the Army (1984) I bought a used Kenwood KA-400 amp, Onkyo TX-2500 receiver, and an early made set of Series VI BOSE 901 speakers (with EQ). I think I paid $1200 for the whole setup.
I had the chance to buy some vintage Savard home speakers (12" 3 way) last year for $300.
Back in the 1970s my roomie and I has a hardon Karmon Citation amp and preamp with ESS speakers and my roomie had a fancy setup with a set of Bose 901's we hooked up the two systems and ran them together it was one of the best sounding systems ever. The Bose had the punch and the ESS speakers did the high end and low end. the music sounded live! When I was an owner operator I made a delivery to Bose ,an engineer [nerd] was taking a break on the loading dock so I started talking stereos. The guy was brilliant and ended up taking me through the plant. At the end of the tour security told me this is private and escorted me out of the building.

I have a pair of Dahlquist M-907 studio mastering monitor (early eighties vintage) I got off EBAY year ago still in giant boxes.
They require re-foaming of the large advent derived square magnet woofers and I have the re-foaming kit on deck.
I am going deaf, so no rush. I think they have vifa tweeters.

I will have to pick a nice re-furb vintage amp and use a transformer volume control to maintain good current drive to keep the punch when you "pad down" the signal for the amp. I have no good source and BT APTx is not that. Source is king.

For you deep audio guys, here is the page for the volume control, you may be unaware of.

I like collecting old amps or receivers from the 1980's to have some music around. I have an NAD receiver that needs some work. It has a hum that sounds like a 60 hertz power hum. I have been looking for someone who can fix the receiver. I have a nice pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers that are paired with the receiver.

The acoustics of the room are terrible though since it is in my garage...

Does anyone know of a repairman or service around New Hampshire that can repair the NAD receiver?

I took home a 2011 Panasonic 58" plasma tv. The owner moved out. It has some burn in as i can make the faint outline of the espn logo on the bottom right corner. List price when new was $4400. I about fell over at the price. My dad and i found a pair of polk audio tower speakers at goodwill for $30. I think new they were $300 dollars per side new.

I just wanted something to play holiday music during Xmas so I went to craigslist, and get a used set someone retire from. It works, and for $40 I can't think of a better ROI.

The biggest problem is finding a sealed tower speaker set. I went to Best Buy a year ago and looked through their home audio department. They didn't have a single set of sealed tower speaker. Everything was a ported design. Granted my local bestbuy isn't huge, but the sales guy knew what i was getting at.

Scratching by these days with Klipsch LaScalas, various subs, various single-ended triode amps, Shiit D/A converter, various front ends, mainly cd and cable. Want tube-like sound with ten watts of Solid state class A ? Look up the famous JLH amp and either build one or buy a clone.

CERWIN VEGA D-9 FOR LIFE

Additional info, speaking for me: Any upgrade from quality of these will be amazing to me, as these are the pinnacle of my limited exposure. Bose Acoustimass 5 and 7 systems were popular when I was into this and life provided for a quality setup for home audio. The price of those was hard to justify.. It's all the car audio now and portable for me.. just as an aside of why I will likely not be purchasing loudspeakers "in the near future."

I picked up a pair of Polk LSiM707's, along with the center and surrounds in pristine condition for $1k about 4 years ago.

Otherwise, I build most everything else I own.

For the price, you simply can't beat these!

I have them in the bedroom, my home office, and considering a third set...for not sure yet ;-)
