Everyone should pay attention to what Richard mentioned about motor oil contamination introduced in the blending, packaging, and shipping processes. And yes, that's why we have filters.

When we no longer have boil water advisories or discoloured water coming from faucets in North America, that's when we can really worry about insignificant contamination of motor oil.
 
There's confusion on "impurities" , and the article doesn't help itself in that regard.

There's dirt which is an impurity, and there's impurities.

Parafins, Wax and stuff is simply something that comes with the crude, Hydrotreating chews them up and turns them into stuff that more resembles oil. They are impurities, for sure, but I'd hardly call them "insolubles"...good luck filtering them out at any normal sort of running temperature.

Sulfur is in crude, some undoubtedly makes it through the process...it's an impurity too.

Dirt is dirt, sand (silica) etc. and just because your oil is made from natural gas, doesn't mean that it's NOT got dirt in it...can be dirt anywhere in the process, catalyst dust, dirty drums etc.

When we check a brand new drum of hydraulic oil, it's particle count is generally woeful...so bad that we decant it through a 5um filter into the equipment. Put it in dirty, and the service filters eventually clean it up, but they get loaded. Cheaper and easier to clean it on the way in.

This sounds like as a good a method of selecting an oil as any.
I was kidding in the origianl post, though.
 
Every advertisement for "synthetic" motor oil mentions how much better it is than "conventional" motor oil.
Does conventional mean manufactured from a solvent refined group 1 base stock?
If so, then all engine oils that meet API SN or CJ-4 is better than conventional motor oil.
I think the oldest "S" catagory is API SJ. Someone find us an SJ that is group 1.

Is group 1 still available? Is there any solvent refineries left operating in North America?

What product more sophisticated than roofing tar would be manufactured from a group 1 base oil?

Sure oil companies would like you to buy their synthetic motor oil. But they would be more happy if you would take your motor home pulling a boat full of dirt bikes across the country and back.
