"Non-Cracked Solvent & Neutral Base Stock

There are 2 different processes that can be used to refine crude il. Catalytic cracking uses heat to remove impurities and extract gasoline and diesel fuel. Crude is heated to 1900 degrees and the molecule of the oil is brocken (cracked) down.

The result is you lose the lubricating qualities of the removed fuels and what is left is damaged product which is susceptible to thinning when exposed to temperature or pressure. It also mises easily with water (emulsifies) and has a higher flash point.

Solvent Neutral Extraction on the other hand, uses solvents or chemicals instead of heat to refine crude oil. The complete molecule of the oil remains intact. The fuels (gasoline and diesel) are not removed resulting in a "non-cracked solvent neutral base stock" which is vastly superior to crude which have had the fuels removed. It resists thinning even under much higher temperatures and pressures. The result is an oil that can be run for many hours straight with no significant thinning. Oil pressure stays high, resists wash-down from fuel getting past engine rings and contamination of anti-freeze which can also get into the engine. The oil life is greatly increased. Mack Trucks has approved ULX-110 for 40,000 to 50,000 miles change intervals."

Tribs, Specialist, is there any truth to this quote ???

Is that from the ULX site ?

Check the first paragraph for spelling. The rest of the stuff is half baked drivel. Their specs don't look that flash either.

Note on one page the "Reduces Oil Change Intervals" claim.

Another.."Delivers up to 15 more horsepower!"...I'll bet that Briggs and Stratton Go-karters would love the stuff.

What I just read tells me two things:

1. They are using the cheapest Group I base stock they can buy.

2. They have never been to a refinery and have no clue what they are talking about.

Unfortunately 2 things Johnny,

1) This stuff is made in U.S, imported to Oz. literature states GRoup 1, they have told be Group 2+. Problem is alot of big name racers and dragsters here use the stuff.

2) Pennzoil in Australia/Asia are still using Group 1 in their mineral and blends. SO is everyone else. But the best part about it is this stuff cost $50+ U.S dollars to buy here.

It just didn't make sense reading that, as if they are the only ones in the whole wide world that new this......


Shannow, yeah from the ULX site. They recently updated the site, they still have the Astro Turf-Synthetic oil analogy on there somewhere hehe

I'm not sure about the Pennzoil in Australia/Asia still using Group I and have no way to find out, but if they are, STAY AWAY FROM IT. I would not put a Group I oil on a weed patch.
 
If you look at the water in stagnant swamps, you'll often see an oily rainbow sheen from degraded plant matter. I wonder if you could skim this stuff off and process it in a double boiler in the back of the garage, then throw in some additives with zddp and calcium etc. and run it in an engine. Would only try on car that is slated for the junkyard though.

Bingo. Whoever wrote that garbage doesn't know the first thing about hydrocracking and isomerization.
 
This was written by someone who read a couple of articles and then thought he knew enough to explain it to everyone else. But he doesn't. He's mixed up gasoline production with lubricating oil production. "Crude Oil" isn't fed to a Cat Cracker and certainly not to a solvent extraction process. And it's heated to around 700 deg F (for a Crude Unit), not 1900. It's first fed to a Crude Unit that typically is made up of 2 fractionating towers (Atmospheric and Vacuum). Side cuts and bottoms from those 2 towers then either feed a Cracker (fluid CC is common) for gasoline production, or to a Lube unit for oil production. A straight thermal cracker can have a feed temp as high as 1500F but that's old school as far as I know. Even this is a horrendously over-simplified explanation but the original explanation that was quoted (below)is worthless. This all reminds me of the endless days/weeks/months I used to spend in the refineries around here (20 years ago). I don't miss it.

They totally left out the hydrogenation part of the process.
 
Coming from you Johnny and everyone else, i will take this advice about group 1 now quite seriously. Unfortunately with only 20 million people, and not many consumers knowing GRoup 1 is very common. The only time i will use it now is in Mobil Delvac MX or Delo 400 Multigrade which i believe this have some of it in it, but has proven itself.

Still Meets all the Delo 400 specs, has the U.S version got Group 1 in it as well ?

This Gentleman found the holy grail of engine oil, it even withstands coolant in the oil !!!

(TO their credit, i have spoken to people who use it in drag cars, and it is similar to Brad Penns i think in that its able to withstand alcohol fuels without turning to jelly....... hence alot of references being made on the site to drag racing)

He probably means that the Group 1's poor performance is what gives mineral oil a bad rap, where as GRoup 2 and 3 and the plus versions can make excellent oils and had they done so earlier than they did, mineral oil may have had a better oil, or in another way less ammo for the syn fanatics to use.... ???
