Diesel pickup science project. What is the verdict on a Donaldson P56467? It looks like filter bases with reasonable inlet outlet size (3/8") can be found for the 1"-12 size. The goal is honestly to avoid the cost of the amsoil kit if I can piece together something. Finding an appropriate filter with a corresponding base seems to be the challenge.

Six microns at 99.99%. 5.35" long. The convenience of a spin-on vs a cartridge. Are we keen on using hydraulic filters at, worst case ~250 F.

Orifice, check.

In the grand scheme, is there any reason not to consider a filter in the "diesel fuel" category. Commonly available, well regarded filters ~99% into the 2-3 micron range with threads for which appropriate heads are commonly available. Something like a Donaldson P551313 or P551311. Oil (cold) is clearly thicker than fuel but these filters are rated 1.5-2 gpm, and since this is a lowly orifice restricted bypass system...

Is there anything special about a filter designed as a low flow lube oil bypass filter as opposed to a fuel or hydraulic oil filter? Construction to deal with temperatures?

Then again, these exist in the 1"-16 thread, which would put me using reasonably affordable filters that are marketed/intended for bypass oil use. At $53 for a mount, it starts to make going off-label (trying to find a oil/fuel/hydro filter and mount combo appropriate for bypass filtration) less appealing.

Smaller would be better, but 3/8" NPT fittings reduces the amount of adapting necessary.

I'm working on something similar but using a 3/4-16 filter head as it's the most economical for me and I already use several filters with that thread. One of the filters I'm going to try is a Hitachi FF sourced through Deere. I think it's rated 10u or better.

Baldwin has an actual "bypass oil filter" B7018 in 3/4-16. 15 absolute, if true, probably makes it a pretty good filter for BP. I wonder if it cross references to any other useful filters.

if you don't mind me asking, where'd you find an economical 3/4-16 head? Perma Cool 1791, 1701, 1711, etc?
