I have been running the FL1A size filter on my Aerostar 3.0 (1992) for the past 4 years with no problems, no startup noise. I noticed that the Wix/CarQuest Blue Filters are still in the white canister. I also have the Napa Gold Filters. Which unfortunately are black.

I agree Wix should have better things to do. Than change the color of a paint scheme.
 
As far as I know all WIX premium filter have the bypass on the base end (if a bypass is applicable).

As far as the color of the can, I think all should be black unless they are an old stock. (I may be wrong though)

Millions buy Fram for the color of the filter. It's not too out of whack to buy based on where the label ends up after spinning it on ...

Maybe the label should be separate in the box for the customer to apply like a decal after the filter is mounted.

I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason to the bypass placement. For example, the Wix 51515 (FL1A) and 51773 (long version, F299) both have threaded (base) end bypass valves.

Get Purolators and the short one has the dome end, but the long one has the base end bypass.

Get Baldwin and it's the reverse of Purolator with the short one having the base end bypass, and the long one having the dome end bypass.

Don't know how much longer the Car Quest filter will be white, but I am stuck on red now.
 
just get a aftermarket chrome filter cover and put your wix decal on there, then you can just swap the cover to the next filter when you change the oil on it next time around :D

I have 8 PL20195 puke color filters sitting here, imagine popping the hood and seeing that color? I suffer from a little OCD myself and am tempted to paint them a different color. Now logo placement???????????????????? Another issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a problem with Fords and Mustangs in particular. We spend millions of dollars to get the label aligned so that it can be read from the top, and then Ford goes and changes where the lead thread starts on their filter stud. My suggestion would be for you to purchase a newer model Mustang since the current filter stud and our filters are in sync as to label orientation.

My VW has the same issue with almost every filter I've used. The label always faces "backward" and all you see is a painted can.

Come to think of it, I think the Mobil 1 filters have a larger label than most, so you can actually tell what type of filter is on there.

Bottom line: I couldn't care less one way or the other.
 
on most of my filters you can't really see the filter from the top regardless, and i use either motorcraft or purolator and maybe an occasional supertech or quakerstate.


it guess if the label doesn't show i'm not bothered, cause i know whats on it :)
 
Why not un-crimp the mounting plate, rotate the canister 180 degrees, and re-crimp. Probably use a little JB-Weld to make sure the re-crimp job holds extra well. I think Channel-lock pliers will work for the re-crimping.

How many people actually look under your car, let alone check the orientation of the decal on the oil filter?

The only suggestion that I have for Wix is to shrink wrap each filter to keep dust, moisture and other contaminants out while they are being stored. I use Wix and Amsoil EaO oil filters exclusively on both of my Honda vehicles. The Honda OEM oil filter, which is made by Honeywell (AKA Fram), comes shrink wrapped. How much more would it cost Wix and Amsoil (EaO's are often made by Wix) to do the same?
 
the OP would really have issues if his vehicle used cartridges. LOL.

What about the oil you put in? In what way to you signify it's use that is visible looking down at the engine? Do you feel mad when you have to cover up your air filter? Then there is that issue of fuel brand...

maybe you could leave the empty boxes and a bottle under the hood so you could be reminded?

Maybee it is the oil filter bung that I should replace, or ask the parts guy to bring up about 5 or 6 filters so I can see where the threads start in relation to the label, and bring a set of calipers to measure the thickness of the o-ring/gasket and do the math as to where the label will line up nest time.

The thing is that when the guys and I are standing around the engine compartment drinking a beer, I usually point things out on the engine, and it would look awsome to see it.
 
Take a photo of of it and tape it to your dash. Then while driving you'll be able to look at it and know that's a WIX your oil is flowing through, and you will feel all warm and fuzzy.

All you need is a set of varying thickness O-rings. Still, I think the bright red Baldwin is going to look the best, and won't matter which side faces up. Baffle you friends with the bright red, they will be thinking Fram orange and be puzzled at the off color.
 
I showed this thread to about 5 different guys at work that wrench on their own cars.

All basically responded "is that guy gay"?
