What's the difference vs the platinum and the ultra platinum now that they are both made via GTL basestocks. Please school me. I've searched for 2 hours and can't find the info I'm looking for. If you are wondering the question is specifically focused towards the 5w-30 grade.

There's tons of this exact post floating around.

Well, the gist of what I've read in other threads is that Pennzoil is vague at explaining it all, except to basically say "Pay more for Ultra if you want a cleaner engine (SN Sequence IIIG piston deposit tests say so.)." Thats it.

Just sayin, experts on this bitog have said that an additive package is a balance and compromise, so that if Ultra is cleaner as Pennz claims, then MAYBE Platinum actually beats Ultra slightly in wear performance. Its been surmised anyway, in a sea of vagueness.

I know one thing for sure: Walmart it not stocking the shelves with both Platinum and Platinum Ultra. They're going with Platinum and that's it. They probably figure there's no point in stocking both full synthetics.

I know, in the Colorado area, Walmarts rarely stock Ultra anymore. I ordered a couple of jugs a while back at Walmart.com mailed to me.

By contrast, I noticed my local Walmart is stocking the preimum new-ish Castrol Edge Extended Performance, comparable I suppose to the Pennz Ultra market and Mobil1 Extended Performance market.

People reported here previously that their Walmarts carry both oils. Both at the same price, too.

None of the Walmarts here have Pennzoil Ultra. It's frustrating because it's not like the store doesn't have the space. They could easily have all the brands in all the viscosity grades if they wanted to.

The local Wal Mart has BOTH in stock...which is odd considering they NEVER stocked the previous Ultra (Platinum only). Several other Wal Marts in the area DID stock the previous Ultra and I cleaned them out when they discontinued it and put it on clearance. At this rate, I'm good for another year or so. I'll stick with Pennzoil when the time comes and hopefully will have enough info. from the UOA's here to decide which to use.

Some do, some don't. Don't ask me about the logic involved.
