Thinking of switching to Castrol Syntec and calling it a Day on the car. No MMO or anything, Syntec is a cleaner if it is Synthetic and with about 170,000 miles i wonder fi i should get the engine accustomed to it.

It is Group 3, is it not? I will Happily do some reading, if i decide to switch away from the Valvoline family to an Oil that will provide additional benefits, assuming it does not start to leak.

Also 5000 mile OCIs I can do.

Valvoline makes good synthetic oils, why change from Valvoline if you want synthetic?

What engine are we talking about, too?

This is the 2.5L 24V DOHC Probe.

Im thinking that perhaps Syntec will provide better mix of Cleaning, Sealing, and Viscosity Maintenance than the Valvolines, including the MaxLife i use. Year Round.

If its average to above average in all areas, its fine with me. And if no new leaks pop up from Too Much Cleaning, even better.

It sucks, stick with Valvoline. Or if you really want to use Castrol, use GTX which is an excellent oil.

If you concerned about cleaning then pick a GM4718M Registered Oil. Last I heard standard Valvoline Synpower, Quakerstate UD-QHP and Pennzoil Platinum and Warren Full Synthetic (SuperTech) all were. Just to name some affordable easily available oils.

Valvoline and PP are both on sale at Advance Autoparts for $3.99 a Qt.

You can get QS for $18.50 a 5 Quart Jug minus a $10 Mail-In Rebate (Net price $1.70 Qt) at WalMart.

As of June-01-2009 regular 5W30 or 10W30 Castrol Syntec wasnt on the GM 4718M Registration list. It may have changed since.

Use whatever oil you want, if you like castrol use it, if you like valvoline use that, mobil 1 use that pennzoil you get the idea.. there is very very little difference if any between any of these oils when compared to along the same tier !! One may be slightly better at something over the other one, however very slight not the overwhelming sense that the manufacture would have you believe.. after much much oil debate this is the opinion I have formed.

Not all Syntec sucks. He could go with German Castrol (ie: Castrol Syntec 0w30 European Formula) as well as the 5w40 Euro is good stuff. But I do agree, GTX is awesome and would more than fill his needs.

But I do love SynPower. That's a great oil for a great price.

I think if you expect any oil to clean you're fooling yourself. Maybe, and this is a huge maybe, except pennzoil ultra. I think synthetic oils do a great job to maintain a clean engine. However, I don't think you should expect a synthetic to do clean up any previous deposits. If you want to clean up an engine, I'd look into Auto-RX.

In regards to the base oil composition of syntec, don't believe anything you read. People can guess, but they really have no idea. My personal guess is its a group 3/4/5 mix, with the mix varying depending on grade.

I can tell you castrol gtx hm work very well on my 2006 toyota camry v6. no leaks, no oil consumption.. It is already over 8,000 miles since my last oil changed..

I think castrol syntec is one of the excellent synethetic oil in the market.
