My wife and I were watching the Mecum Auto Auctions this weekend and she commented that quite a few of the cars were selling for the price of our first house - around $120,000. She couldn't understand it but if I had the money (which I don't) I could see doing that. So, for lark's sake, what would you want if you could spend 'house money' on a car? Values of houses obviously vary per region and neighborhood, so pick the house ya want

LOL, houses around me sell for about as much as a somewhat-loaded minivan. So probably a loaded Fusion hybrid, loaded Prius, or BMW 335d without that many options.

What has to be realized is if you have a bazillion dollars in your checking account, $500,000 dollars isn't very much.

I just sold my townhouse for $325,000 so maybe I should take that money and buy a Lamborghini Murcielago! Of course, the bank wants their cut (mortgage isn't paid off) and my soon to be ex wife wants her cut too, so I guess the Lambo will have to wait

Well, I have spent as much money on a vehicle as I did my first home(give or take). I am talking about years between the two pruchaces but...

And today, it's not hard to spend as much money on a vehicle as many home are selling for.

I haven't bought a used car in many years but, because the quality is much better than ever, I think that I will be doing the pre-owned thing in the future. And I am going to take my time and really get what I want for the money, color and everything!

It's pretty common for older people. The last 3 or 4 cars my parents bought cost more than their house. They have lived in the same house since 1969 - they paid $22,000 for it. Same with my Grandfather, he paid $5,000 for his house in the 1940s and lived there until he passed away in the early 1990s.

If I were to spend "house money" on a car, it would have to be on several...there are so many interesting ones...

For that kind of money, I could get a 1932 Packard Twin Six (V-12) dual-cowl Phaeton and still have enough left over for a couple of Ferraris and some 60's muscle...

My house is worth about $100,000.

I can't imagine buying a car for that amount of money. However, I could definitely see buying a truck, as well as a boat, and a pop up camper for that amount. :-)

And as for the domestic side of the coin;

I'd buy a manual CTS-V sedan for the weekdays, and a modded and lightened Z06 Carbon Edition for the weekend toy.

+1 on that idea...

I would test drive and choose from the following: Murcielago, Gallardo, 599, F430, 458 Italia, R8 V10, ZR-1, MP4-12c, and some sort of 911. If I went used then a Saleen S7 or a McLaren F1 might interest me as well. This is assuming that I have obscene amounts of money so operation and maintenance is a non-issue. If I have to live on a normal amount of income while owning the car, the most expensive vehicle I'd want is a Z06, or maybe a Cayman.

A friend just spent $130K+ on a 2011 GT3. It's fun if you're into racing or going to the track, but I think I'm past that. Whatever I'd get, it'd have to be something that I could still drive on the street without much hassle. Audi R8 maybe?

Around here its not uncommon for the car to be worth more than the house, but hey thats flint for you.

As one previous poster said it depends on the price of the house, but.... If I had that kind of money, and am working on it I'd have to say I'd absolutely have to have a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO series one body style. Only 32 were ever built with the series one body 39 in total. Current going rate is between 7 and 28 million! If not one of those definitely a 1986 Porsche 930 Slant nose "Flachbau". And of course a Corvette Carbon edition as well.

Yeah, very subjective. We paid $35K for our house, 4/1, 1600sf, small town. We fully intend to spend $35K for a 2011 or 2012 Explorer XLT when my wife decides she is ready to give up the Durango. Now me personally, if I was single, I would be very content with a $30K house and ten $3K cars.
