IMO that is a worthless point... SOOOOOO many companies and engines are like this these days with the modern sensors, etc.

heck, dodge neon DOHC engines from long ago did this same thing.

Well, I guess if the cost per mile were cheaper running premium (i know my mom's Avalon gets better mileage with premium) then it would be cost effective but not when the Jeep Grand Cherokee can achieve the same ratings without the need for premium fuel.

Narrowed it down: 01-02 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L V8 (gets better mileage than the 4.0L six) and the Dodge Ram Cummins with a 6-speed.

The wife has a 2003 Durango 4X4 with the 4.7 and no problems so far. 16 mpg on the average. That's a mix of city and highway driving. I dislike SUVs though and when the Durango needs to be replaced will do my best to talk her out of getting another. But it's her $$$. I guess I'm a greenie deep down, but we all have to do our part to save our natural resources.

Even with the old engines you could advance the timing to get more power with premium. New engines/control systems just do it automatically.

Get the WJ.

I have an 02 Laredo with the 4.7, NV242 and Trailer Tow. Dont waste your time with the pretend SUV cross over stuff, if you want a car get a car if you want 4WD with towing capability get an SUV. I get about 22 MPG highway and 18-19 MPG day in/day out. If you find an Overland so much the better. I put a 3" exhaust with high flow cat and dynomax on the wifes WJ, she loves it, great in the winter.

You should easily be able to find a good used one at reasonable prices. Contrary to what some say ours has been dead nuts reliable and I know many other people with them who likewise have not had issues with theirs.

VNT

VNT, I know they are reliable. My father has a 00 2WD 4.7L WJ. I love it. I guess if the gas mileage on the 4.7L is somewhat like the Dodge CTD, I might end up with the WJ just because its something I'm used to. I wish I could find a 4.7L with the 242. Are you on JU? If I were to play with the WJ, I would definently throw a Magnaflow/Kolak exhaust and a K&N FIPK with the Berni Ram-IT kit. I also want to throw in a sub. That would be great.... ah..... choices choices. I'm trying to make at least 10K. My father says he'll take care of the rest because he "owes me a more reliable Jeep."

Confession: the WJ is my fathers but my sister drives it. It started a family feud when she got it. Well, at least feud between me and the rest of the family. Little sister rubbed it in my face when she got it like the brat she it. I've been having to pay to repair so much on my Jeep that it has set me back a lot. Its to the point where my parents said, when's the big break gonna happen.

What is a WJ?

How are the Jeep Wranglers with the 4.0L in terms of reliability? My dad had one for only 2 years. Seemed like a good vehicle.

I like my '72 Scout for an SUV, and I would take an Excursion with a Powerstroke!

I second the Scout (I'll take it with the half-a-V8 4 banger), but I would also want a Bronco with a 300 cubic inch inline six.
