If M1 ATF is now Mercon V compatible......

I would like to know as well. My transmission calls for Mercron. The manual for my 2004 F250 with 4R100 transmission states 'Some transmission fluids may be labeled as dual usage, such as Mercron and Mercron V. The dual usage fluids are not to be used'. Philip.
 
If M1 ATF is now Mercon V compatible, does it have more friction modifiers?

If so, how is it good for transmissions that spec only DexronIII?

I want to drain and refill my '00 Silverado 4l60e, but I'm not sure if the new M1 ATF would be good?

Could someone chime in and explain how an ATF that can go into a MV application be good for a DexIII application?

thanks for the link.

it looks like its "approved" for Allison C-4, Mercon, and DexIII applications, and "recommended" for the others.
 
Reply I got from Mobil when I asked them,

'You should not according to your owner's manual recommendations. Mobil
ATF D/M which is a conventional fluid is the only product that we have
that will meet your vehicle requirements that is not a dual purpose fluid.

None of the Mobil ATFs other that Mobil1 syn is available OTC in most regions. Real idiots, why in the world do you have a product when it is not available to users. I remember calling a Mobil distributor who had many of their NON-AVAILABLE ATFs in 16G drums....
 
Wow, that is a pathetic response. Since when is specifying an ATF fluid a "technical" question. Especially after you point out that the dealerships gave varying answers.

OTOH, there are way too many different ATF fluids out there.

Honestly, can Mercon V be used in a Nissan transmission which calls for DexronIII/Mercon?

Thank you for the reply, but I feel as though I was brushed off. I asked a question and wanted facts from the people who engineered my transmission (FMC) and who will give answers with responsibility. If I had wanted someone's opinion who is confused about this topic and give carefree answers that they will not back up after my transmission has been destroyed by using the wrong oil, then I would have asked the dealership to begin with.

But just to humor you and make me more angry I called three dealerships on the way home last night. Would you believe I got three different answers? Here are my results.

Dealership #1, Matlock Ford, Franklin, Indiana. Small town dealership near my work who's service department I absolutely do not trust. They said they put Mercron V in all of the trucks. I asked if he could provide me with a TSB, and he said no. I asked him how he knew this, and he said his boss told him so. I wonder what they put in the TorqueShift?

Dealership #2, Ray Skillman Ford, Greenwood, Indiana. Very large Indy suburb dealership near my home. They said to use Mercron 3. There is no such thing as Mercron 3!!!

Dealership #3, Wabash Ford and Sterling truck sales, Indianapolis, Indiana. This is a truck only dealership, and this is where I purchased my truck. They asked me what my dipstick said, I said Mercron, they said to use Mercron.

As you can see, this is a very confusing topic and the dealerships are more confused than I am. I want a straight answer from Ford, can I now use a dual rated Mercron / Mercron V ATF fluid in my 4R100, such as the new blend of Mobil 1 synthetic ATF fluid?

Maximaguy, though I am not a nissan expert, I would not use Mercon V in DexIII applications.

It appears that the new M1 ATF is a "multi-use" ATF, not a "Dual Purpose" fluid.

Example, I would not run lisenced QS or Castrol Mercon V (not labeled "for DexIII app's or "dual use") that I have used in my 4r70w Ford trans in the past in your DexIII spec'd Nissan.

M1 ATF I would use though.

It's still not clear to me the diff b/t Dual Purpose and Multi Use.....
 
What did you expect. Two of the three dealerships gave you the answer which is on your owners manual. Use the owners manual and use Mercon/Dex III. I have an Excape which people are getting filled by the dealers with V. And trans's are failing left and right because of it. If you stay by the owners manual then you know the answer.
 
isn't Mercon/DextronIIIh a "dual use" "dual rated" "multi rated" ATF"....
Ford and GMC's specs are not exactly the same

does any mass production US auto manufacturer test other brand oils or ATFs for compatibility any more?...seems like a self defeating profit killer....
simpler and higher profit margin just sending the specs to a couple oil companies and having the product put in branded bottles and drums

they want us to buy what they sell

at least HMC is clear,use their proprietary ATF only

Apparently, there is nothing in either the DexIII or MV specifications that conflict with each other. (Maybe someone could post these specifications for each of DexIII and MV?)

This is not true for the new DexIV specification. It does conflict with one of the Mercon V specifcations. Therefore, I wouldn't expect to see any dual-rated DexIV/Mercon V fluids.

I had the transmission fluid in my mom's car (which has a 4T40E transmisson) changed with Valvoline Mercon V.

It's been working fine and I checked the shift error times with my scantool and they are all in the normal range.
 
In my area Mobil 1 ATF retails for $6.29 and Amsoil ATF for $9.00 or more. Other than price, what is the real difference between these fluids? I have used both in an F150 with a 4R70W transmission doing drain and fills with good results. Should I continue to buy Mobil 1 and save some money or is Amsoil a better product?
 
Are we sure that the additive package changed in M1 to get the additional rating? There are rumors around that nothing changed in the fluid itself.
 
My understanding is...for a fluid to be legtally ratedunder the license such as Mercon or Mercon-V...it has to use an approved additive pack already on the market meeting the specification. Therefore...old M1 would have used a Mercon rated additive pack from whoever their source is. The new formula would use a Mercon-V additive pack.

I would like Molakule to interject his expertise explaining this.

I suspect since Mobil 1 ATF is "officially" now a multi-vehicle ATF that XOM recommends for Mercon, Dexron, and Chrysler ATF+4 applications that the add pack was changed to include Infineum's T4705 antishudder additive. This additive is supposedly the "real thing" as far as adaptive dynamic friction modification, which is what any fluid meant to cover all three service applications would need.
