If HPL was NOT a sponsor here then how would it truly compare to other boutique oils like redline and Amsoil? What makes HPL different and special?

I don't think it's that only because NOACK isn't something that 99% of people buying oil even look at.
I knew the Davids and HPL a while before they got involved with BITOG. I think I was the first to post a VOA and UOA of their oils here. Would they have the publicity here without being a sponsor? Likely not. A large portion of people here would find anyway possible to make them irrelevant because you can't buy 20 gallons on rebate off the Walmart shelf. Would they still be doing what they're doing with custom blending oils at people's requests, using top shelf base oils and additive chemistry, and being transparent with their customers? Absolutely, they would because that's who they are. They don't cut corners with anything.
I put HPL at or above Amsoil and Red Line. The quality is as good or better, and they are much more personal. Try calling Amsoil, Red Line, Driven, or any of the majors, and ask for a single change of custom blended oil just for your specific application, using top of the line chemistry not employed in hardly any other oil on the market. They won't do it. That's not their wheelhouse. To me, that's what puts HPL a notch above the rest.

I am sure I came here long after what you describe , that Royal Purple hatred. Even coming in later , just thru looking back at old posts on a bunch of different subjects , old threads etc... I did pick up on that anti-Royal Purple hate. Thing is It wasn't just at BITOG. It was all over. At the time I felt maybe their competition was afraid of them and nervous and may have contributed to it. Similar to the Amsoil + Red Line hate that has been around the internet and other places for years.
To be fair, that hatred of Royal Purple was very valid. Mr. Williams would be turning over in his grave if he knew what Calumet did to his company.

Yes. I would guess a lot of folks missed out on that one. It is such a shame that very few companies these days are safe from exactly what happened there. All the corporate buy outs and mergers since the 1980s have just about killed every once great company we all felt great about and depended on at one time. Its so sad to think about Sears and all the great products they had that are now gone or suffered the same / similar fate as RP.

If HPL didn’t force themselves into the BITOG conversation, no one to very little would be using their products in the first place. They would probably be viewed as snake oil compared to the establishment
That isn’t what happened.
Nobody “forced themselves” into anything.
HPL has a very large customer base, and BITOG is basically a zero percent revenue impact on their balance sheet.
BITOG-related sales comprise <1% of HPL's total revenue.
Instead of watering down the originals, often the boutique brands will offer an “OEM” line, possibly with approvals and licensing.
If you join the club and buy $XX worth, you get a hat, jacket, decals and a monthly magazine all delivered to your door.
The target customers are the people who buy cases of the stuff to sell to friends and relatives.

To me, Pennzoil coming on here a handful of years ago and giving away loads of PUP along with free UOAs, and hosting a couple “ask us ANYTHING!” threads while not really answering any technical questions whatsoever is a whole lot more self-promotion than HPL has ever done on its behalf.
David has sidestepped plenty of opportunities where he could have pimped his product against companies we may consider HPL’s competition; instead, he gives good oils credit and has not uttered a single negative word, nor taken the chance to sell his products to the information-seeker.
You can easily say HPL doesn’t make financial sense for your use and no one will try to convince you otherwise, but there’s no way anyone in their right mind can claim HPL is “forcing themselves” into BITOG conversation by any means other than being the oil supplier that many BITOG geeks have always dreamed about.
I guess people don't remember, before HPL, Renewable Lubes was the greatest thing next to sliced bread thanks to RI_RS6 and Terry Dyson, and a many members, including myself used the super secret 5w40 on their turbo GDI engines.
I have previously lurked since the Caterham + Shannow discussions, too late for Gary Allen.
I remember RLI. Let's compare TBN retention between RLI and HPL. Go ahead.
TBN retention is one of the least worries I have for a motor oil.
I am interested in the promising cutting edge sugar derived bio esters, mentioned on here briefly months ago.
Corn derived RLI is very protective for short duration OCIs, maybe the real cause for waning popularity, price point considered.

I'm not sure what that means? Force themselves? They have been as open as possible, hosting open houses, even formulating oils based on discussions here. And have never knocked a competitor or touted themselves as anything other than a small oil blender that also has passion for engine oils, as the owner is a car guy.
Please post a link to where they forced anything.
As far as fanboys go, I have not seen where members have been telling others to use HPL. I've only seen where users have shared their oil filter pics and uoas.
I use HPL, I'm on first runs in all my vehicles , I don't have any uoas yet. And i have only once suggested someone use HPL, that suggestion was to a poster that asked about adding air-conditioning oil to his motor oil in order to add ester.
I also run Amsoil in my ope. I have thought about HPL, but i think with the yearly changes i do due to dust etc, i think amsoil is more cost effective for my ope.

I like the TBN for my truck. I generally only tow with it, so it sits a lot between trips. I have been over a year since the last change. I like a higher TBN oil sitting in the sump between trips, especially over winter.
