In addition to a failing PTU, my 2016 Explorer has no AC. Went to test today, as it was quite warm outside… nothing. Compressor not turning. Checked fuses, all okay. Then I blipped the Schrader valve for the high and low side… completely flat. Thankfully, with the help of YouTube, I figured out where the leak was. Near the driver’s side muffler, there are two connections for the rear HVAC. They get corroded and leak. Sure enough, I see lots of corrosion and oil on the connections.
I’ve ordered new o-rings and gaskets for these, which were cheap. Assuming I can get them replaced, I know that I have to vacuum the system and then recharge. I’ll rent a vacuum pump and manifold gauges to do this. But, do I need to add more oil to the system? I’m not replacing any components, other than seals. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to dribble a little into the line before I add refrigerant.
