Evac and recharge AC, how much oil is needed?

I want to recharge the AC in our 2015 Impala and add some dye. Currently I won't be changing any components, going to have a shop evac the system then I will use my vacuum pump and gauges to recharge the system while adding dye. My question is, how much oil should I add? I assume there will be some in the compressor as well as the lines.

Some say add an ounce or two for good measure. Typically this is fine unless you know there has been a recent, repeated problem like a chronic leak. Then you add a couple, add a couple more, add a couple more and this isn't great.

IOW everything in moderation.

When I replaced the condenser, accumulator and one of the lines on my Silverado we charged the system at work. Guessed about 2 oz per component and then we put on our UV glasses to look at the show on the frame under the air cleaner and guessed maybe 2 or 3 more.

So I'm working on this today and here's my question. I had the system evacuated, they pulled 2 oz of oil, I'm also replacing the condenser after the fact. Should I go with 4 oz total?

2-2.5 ounces. Complete system capacity is 5 ounces on that vehicle, condenser specifies 1 ounce per service manual. The fact that 2 ounces was recovered would generally indicate that the system was overcharged with oil to start with. Thats a lot of oil to recover on a system that holds so little.

Sorry for the double post....

Yeah, that's what I was thinking also....that's alot of oil. I'll go with 2.5oz.

Well....I can't believe I did this. Before I started this, I grabbed some freon and oil for when it all went back together. I told the person at the store I had a 2015 Impala and needed the correct oil.

I was given Supercool HFO1234yf Universal 68.

I just realized I need PAG 46....after I added 3 Oz. I removed the lower condenser line and I was able to recover 1.75 Oz.

I didn't start the engine/AC and still at the point where it was added. I added into the high side port and I think some made it down towards the firewall.

So I assume this is not compatible?

I should have triple checked beforehand ..my learning experience.

Is any amount compatible being universal or does it need a flush?

The good I guess, is I can easily open this connection and the pipe leading down goes into the firewall, and the lower condenser line is that "drain".

All is good, drained most of it, pulled a vac and refilled with correct oil /134. Been working fine for 3 days with a seperate issue and will do another thread.
