Or, up to about $70 or so. I want to clear out the Check Engine light, to see what codes keep coming back. Thanks!

This is as to the Volvo. Thanks!

Codes.

+1 . Have the same reader. Paid < than $30 at Advance with discount codes a couple of years ago. Advance has a code reader (can't remember which model) in this months ad. Pair that with the best discount code you can find and go at it.

Autel MaxiScan MS300 is available on Amazon for about $20 and if you throw in another $5 in the order, it will ship for free. Granted, a professional tech won't use it for work, but it will clear your codes.

you can order an elm327 off ebay which does a lot more for about $10 . the blue tooth version hooks up to laptops or android phones.

I am wondering how that in fact hooks up to something else?

GREAT replies so far! Weighing my options, as to clearing CEL/getting it here fast.

A basic tool seems fine, but I may very well end up with two (one advanced, one basic.)

Any one of these (or the Actron at AutoZone) will clear the CEL and allow you to read the common OBD II codes.

However, for reading the codes that are manufacturer specific - and for troubleshooting advanced problems, you will need someone with VIDA/DiCE. That software/tool package will allow you to read what is happening on the CAN bus and allow you to reset things like the SRS codes as well as provide all the maintenance/repair procedures for your Volvo.

I am not recommending that you get a copy of VIDA/DiCE, just understand the limitations of what you are buying when you get a code reader.

Go to AZ and get them read. Then apply the money towards solving problems, not scan tools.

I did that, and mine refused.

That is why I want the tool.

That MS509 unit *IS* looking nice...

+1.
Any parts store chain can read and clear codes for you.
I'd save my dollars for that pesky timing belt.

So apparently you already have one? And you've tried AZ already?

What makes you think that spending another 25-70 on another scanner is going to be the magic trick?

For $50 shipped from Amazon, MS509 does *lot* more than just clear the codes.

GHT, buy lots of tools until you win the megabucks. Once that happens, then get the timing belt done. There is no hurry. I mean what is the worst thing that can happen?

Anybody keeping track of his splurging on the tools?

They READ the codes, and one cleared it once. As to CLEARING them, the one took a stance of "no."

Me getting the tool will allow me to clear it for peace of mind for the co-owner, as well as letting me know what is going on!

You are right, they COULD clear them out. Yet they did not!

AutoZone's company policy is to NOT reset codes-you MAY be able to talk them into doing it, but they are not supposed to reset them. That said, I have the Actron, and it is worth the $40 or so to be able to read & reset them.

AAP and Auto Zone in my area will not clear codes.

If you're not being proactive with fixing stuff, I'm not seeing a reason to do anything but know what the codes are. Are you relying upon some magic to make them go away and not come back?

Clearing gives zero peace of mind, just hides issues that still exist.

Get the codes and know what to fix and then do it. Given the sources of limited funds you have, I'd avoid spending upon anything besides valid repairs, not wasting money to clear codes that will come back. Fix the issues and let the codes clear themselves.

+1. Autozone's /AAP's policy is to just read not clear (unless the person you deal with is exceptionally helpful.) I have one of the lower end Actrons and it is well worth the money not to waste time driving to AZ or AAP when a CEL comes on.
