I need a Router

Our Linksys routers last for years as well. We upgrade before we replace because of a bad unit. I think our current WRT54G (v5 I think) has around four years on it.

We have the same router. Don't think we'll ever upgrade. We only surf the web so I think gigabyte connections would be overkill. Had a DLink before and only upgraded because of the new "G" standard. OP you could look at powerline devices. They use your existing electrical system.. not sure how good it works or if it even does!
 
Who is your ISP? Comcast now loans out free wireless routers to their high speed internet customers who rent a cable modem from them. My local branch gave me a very nice linksys N router, but the router you get varies by location.
 
I think I like the hard wire idea as the router seems to work fine for other locations in the structure.

Linksys WRT54GL which I bought in 2005. Its not yet 7 years old but 5 years and NEVER a single problem. It's on 24/7/365 and runs my 15mb dn/up fiber optic line with ease. Same unit on my Parents with the same setup and Sister's DSL setup. All of them 100%.

There you go! It's not "N" but works 100% of the time. I've had many wireless devices going on at once and never a problem.

a GOOD N router will be longer range, but that is really model specific and whether you can hack it to increase power or not.

The most important feature in N that offer enhanced range is the MIMO. Basically it uses multiple antenna to detect multiple path of transmissions, and use that to either cancel out interference or increase data transmission rate. So the same 2.4Ghz would travel the same distance, but you can get more usable bandwidth out of it due to better ability to interpret the signals.

I would recommend a router that can run open source DD-WRT software. DD-WRT beats anything out there for features and stability.

Depends on the type of MIMO, some are just "fake" MIMO not using multi-path, but usually in the router world you do get what you pay for if price difference is huge.

DD-WRT is stable and reliable for broadcom chipset, try it on some Ralink chipset router and tell me they are stable... I have one at home, and switch back to broadcom within a week (also support DD-WRT).

There are many good N router that support DD-WRT, why does it have to be either or?

Doesn't have to be either or and I never said it had to be.

In my experience if someone is having problems with a G router, they aren't automatically going to be solved by going to N. If your problems are RF path related you will probably have problems with G or N, MIMO or not. You have to solve your RF issues and a new router will not help that. The MIMO helps some, but not a lot for a stationary device. Most multi-path issues can be solved by moving the device to another position. If your router is old and on its last leg I would suggest an N router that WILL run DD-WRT reliably as I stated above. You are correct, the Broadcom is the best supported chipset by DD-WRT. I have yet to find any OEM firmware that is as stable and feature rich as DD-WRT.
 
I have the Linksys WRT54GS v1.0 got it at the end of 2002, so it has been 7+ years running non-stop no problems.
 
Find something that can run DD-WRT such as the Linksys WRTxxxxL series or the Netgear WNDR3500.

I'm using an Apple Time Capsule with dual-band and MIMO. Even my neighbor can latch onto my router.
