Great childhood memories. I'm only 6 feet tall but I always feel a bit pinched in by the fat center consoles in cars these days - even my fairly large Lexus SUV cramps me a bit.
I miss bench seats.

I have to say that the seats in my C43 and 318ti are extremely comfortable.
My wife and I are not fans of BarcaLoungers on wheels.
Our '01 Tundra is basically the "Flying Couch".
Good news: 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 can still do it. Now go spend the money and support the clause.
A truck with plush seating isn’t an issue for me. What I absolutely despised were cars like my father-in-law’s Park Avenues; marshmallow seats with no lateral support and suspension tuning to match. The only thing worse than riding in them was driving them- which I also ended up having to do a couple of times.

I read its still not an actual seat unfortunately... I thought our Outback would be a good candidate for a front bench as its got a bit width inside, and the odd time seating 6 would be useful. We did it many times in my fathers 2018 Ram. The Ram had a good setup for the centre console to turn into a seat.
I'm a big fan of nearly free utility features, and stuff like front benches, or wagons with some decent cargo space, hardly costs more to make than a 5 seat hatchback, so why not make the vehicle more capable for minimal extra cost?

If they were Armour All'd it was like sitting on a teflon disk, the seatbelt was the only thing holding you in place with those old Barcaloungers
Crash safety. Middle front seat usually gets a waist only seatbelt. My dad's Taurus has one. It is very uncomfortable even for someone that's only 5'9" like me. Even back in 2001 it is quite useless as a real "seat, because the floor is actually not flat all across the front.
In the RAM we always had someone smaller with shorter legs to put in the middle, and it was fine for a 1-2hr trip. Also the 2019+ Ram's got a 3 pt belt for the middle front passenger.
The middle seat is not for semi-obese middle aged+ adults with back problems to go across the country, but if you've got kids, or grandkids, sometimes seating 6 is handy to load up everyone and everything for a short drive to the park or beach.

My 1962 Studebaker Daytona had buckets with a center console that was level with the seats. The passenger seat reclined. Many memories in that car. Then my 1964 Daytona, both seats reclined. Studebaker had some interesting options.
I had a very old foreign car with a front bench 4sp and 4pt seatbelts
The 1993 suburban had front and rear bench, towing with cargo inside made the front bench a necessity.
