Yea, that's probably how it really went. Sea stories get spread around and it's impossible to fact from fiction.

This happened a LONG time ago, but my grandpa was filling up his car when someone threw down a cigarette butt. He lost his arm in the explosion...and spent a LONG time in the hospital.
I still have the newspaper article about it...the headline of the paper reads "Lindbergh crosses the Atlantic!".

Back in the full-serve days there is a story about a guy who pulled up to a pump, pulled out a gun, and demanded money from the attendant. Turns out that in anticipation the attendant pulled out the nozzle while the guy was pulling up. Once he saw what this guy was up to, he pulled the trigger on the nozzle and doused the guy with gasoline, putting an end to the robbery. No way was the robber gonna pull the trigger covered in gasoline!
You are right. When I was working for Ashland chemical, they gave us some hands on training with fire extinguishers. They picked an open spot well away from the building. They had a couple of cut down barrels filled with gasoline. They would hold a match over it and let it catch fire, and then let us put it out. The trainer also demoed dropping lighted matches into the barrel of gasoline. They made the same psisss as one dropped in water. Hold a match, Bic, cigarette, etc. overt the surface of the gas long enough to light the vapors, and be ready to step back quickly.
Note CO2 extinguishers do a great job on flammable liquids, but on paper, wood etc. fail to cool things down enough o keep from igniting again. The dry chemical works well in many cases. Any electronics in the area may never work again.
