I was thinking about trying a 0w40 or even a 5w40 oil in my Toyota 4Runner (06-V6) in the summer when I tow my camper. The manual says 5-30 or 10-30 in a pinch can be used but nothing listed above that for oil weight. So first off is it ok to run a 40wt oil and is there any advantage to doing so?

It is OK to run 0W-40 or 5W-40 - nothing will break.

However, unless your oil temperatures are consistently much higher than 100C/212F, there's not going to be any benefit.

And also note that the oi temp will be hotter with the thicker oil.

Yeah maybe .754328 degrees... There will be far more heat generated by the extra towing load on the engine than 3 or 4 cSt would cause from the heavier xW-40 oil... If I was dragging something behind my vehicle, it would surely have a xW-40 in it...
