I only play the lottery for high jackpot like these. I bought $2 worth. Anyone else play? Seriously....$266,000,000 (of course 25% goes to uncle Sam and whatever your state taxes are..)

Right off the bat, I would buy a Dodge Ram with the Cummins and a Dodge Challenger SRT8.

Don't quit your day job.

If powerball is over 150 mill I'll play.

The odds are better.

Yeah you might split it with some other people, making it the same as a smaller jackpot, but there's that sliver that you get it all.

As for taxes, probably a good period in history to take the lump sum.

Of course riches don't mean freedom, some bozo might try to kidnap you or someone you love. I like leaving my car doors unlocked and money would take that away.

Doesn't a high jackpot mean the odds of winning are even lower?

Also, I thought the tax on an amount like that was a LOT higher than 25%....

It's not lame at all to play though, IMO. If you know the odds, buy the ticket with your own hard-earned money, and don't let it become an obsession, more power to you.

Actually, for the Jackpot prize, Powerball odds are much worse than the Mega Millions. For petty prizes, Powerball is better.

Well, I don't smoke and I don't drink so I guess playing the lotto ain't so bad.

If I had 266,000,000.00 I would have no worries about lubrication. You would never hear from me again. According to my e-mails I am a multi-billionaire.

I am not a gambler, but I still think lotteries are good programs.

I worked for a state lottery division years ago. It was a good operation. The payout ratio is good (better than casinos) and operations overhead was lean and efficient (a model to other state agencies, really). The profit went to the taxpayers.

When I worked for the lottery, I was legally prohibited from playing it for obvious reasons. When my prohibition ended, I bought a scratcher of the game I helped deploy. It was a $2 ticket, and I won my $2 back. I haven't played since, but every once in a while I think about buying a ticket when the jackpot gets high. I never get around to it, though.

They are almost the same in quantum, but infinitely better than not having a ticket.

My state just sold the sate lottery...for around 3 years profit.

And then changed the laws so that you can buy lotteries products on credit, and unclaimed prizes go to the new buyer, not the state.

retards.

gotta be in it to win it. i call it the idiots tax myself, but maybe blow a humongous $6 on occasion to be sure i don't miss out. someone HAS to win it. I am someone just like everyone else are someones.

I know 2 people who won $100k plus, and a couple that won $8k.

Will only play when it's $20M plus.

Feel sadly sorry for the pensioners feeding their tickets through the machines.

its either feeding the lotto machine or pulling one arm bandits less than 100m from my (and everyone else's) house...

I play the lottery here all the time, in fact I've played the same two sets of Lotto 649 numbers since 1986 and have not missed one single draw! I figure sooner or later those numbers will win (although it could be 1000 years from now!)

I believe in entering a lot of free contests online too, in fact I just won $6,649 a month ago on a local contest! Persistence pays off.

It is a dumb tax to some extent as folks without finances will try to pay for the quick easy (supposedly) money. However, I maintain that they would probably be blowing it on something else otherwise anyway.

If a pensioner spends their money on lottery tickets, who am I to tell them no? At the same time, I am not inclined to give them a free handout when they cannot afford food. Choices and consequences for actions effect us all.

I'll buy a ticket now and again. Why? because I figure that 50% or so goes to one program or another - programs that I'd likely be taxed for anyway if the lottery didnt exist. I am pretty confident that I will NOT win the jackpot, but Im paying in for some programs and educational causes that are good for someone, and meanwhile providing myself with infinitely higher chances of winning the jackpot than by not playing. I figure that if I can win a few dollars, or preferably a few thousand, it will pay for itself, and Ill pay my mortgage off that much sooner. For the $5/year in lottery tickets that I buy, I won't be missing the money.

Why are the odds better when the jackpot is big? I'm not following. Does the game change somehow?
