I've been relegated to having someone else change my oil instead of myself.

Was looking for a shop that might offer Valvoline Restore & Protect. WalMart offers it, so off I went.

As I was checking in, they tell me they don't carry the oil filter for my Volbo 3.0l T6. They recommend picking one up from the parts store. So off I go, get the filter and return.

I meandered out to the shop and there were two guys trying to get the plastic oil filter housing cap off, no joy. They didn't want to chance breaking it, so we agreed to just leave it in place and Id have it changed later. They put in 7.2qts of fresh VRP oil and I went to check out. Shop lead came to the counter and said because they couldn't complete the full oil change service there would be no charge.

Cool

Brought it home, and changed the filter myself. It was wicked tight, so I understood their reluctance to not proceed with the filter removal.

All said and done, got a free oil change save tor the cost of the Napa gold oil filter (on sale for $5.75 btw)

It sounds like you should have a spare oilfilter housing ( and gaskets if they don't come with a new filter ) as a backup everytime an oc is done for that vehicle.
It seems as though the OP might be the one that tightened it (too much ?), but had no issues getting it off, or at least makes no mention of issues. If it's always crazy tight no matter how gentle it's put on, yeah, having a spare housing would be a good idea.

2015 XC70 3.0l T6. Oil filter is top-Side, so no drain.

I'm guilty, I tightened it. But honestly, it is snug going on, then just bottoms out. So I typically just give a snug pull on ot once it bottom ls out.

It wasn't really any tighter than I normally experience. But from their point of view, I get it. They were under the car looking for the oil filter, I showed them ot was topside, and told them how to remove the P/S reservoir (required) to access and remove the filter.

When I first got the car, I recall now that I googled removing this because I thought it was excessively tight as well. Just used to it now, but for the young men who never worked on this model car before, I certainly understand.

That's a really good point. I think I'll orelder a spare.

Our house is on the market, so it's always 15 minutes from (show ready) so no working on cars right now.

Just as I posted this, we got another showing tomorrow morning. I'll be glad once it sells 😁

Get a torque wrench and tighten it at the spec.

So, in light of my (presumably uncalibrated hand tightening) I bought the oil filter wrench for the Avalon.
I'll break it loose before taking it.

Having someone else perform maintenance on my cars is a new concept for me.

So WalMart did the oil change in the Avalon with Valvoline Restore and protect with a Fram Synthetic Endurance filter.

It's been a few weeks, and no leaks or issues.

I'll admit, it's kinda nice not changing the oil myself.

And not having to do the least favorite part of DIY changes... taking the used oil back to the auto parts store for recycling.
