I found this interesting, regarding the cold...........

The one question I would have is, how many people having this problem lack garages? If you have a garage and use the feature to tell your Tesla to preheat the battery for your commute, I imagine the cold will be much less of an issue.

The argument that if you do not have access to a garage or maybe a dedicated charging port, an EV might not be a good fit for you, is relevant here, and moreso if you live in a cold climate. No problems with that.

But you outers who just love to jump on this stuff can kiss my grits, pretty much. Tired of your circle (you know what).

Nothing to see here, move along. These aren't the droids you're looking for.

I've used gas pumps that were literally slower than charging my EV.
Did you ever go back and try that pump again?

I used a pump once that took twenty minutes to fill up half of my truck tank. The dollar amount was going up like the gallon amount usually does. By the time I realized this I figured I might as well just let it run instead of moving. But I since I go to the same truck stop for diesel each week, I decided to try the same pump again the week after and it was fine. It was strange.

I have had some super slow pumps on occasion. Always in severe cold. But pumps are ubiquitous, and it is easy to simply move on to another one nearby, or go get a cup of coffee* in the warmth.

*Most gas station coffee is atrocious, however, at the Maplefields in the center of Stowe, VT, which was a Mobil station, the coffee was excellent; fresh brewed Green Mountain Coffee in a wide variety of roasts and flavors. Always fresh, always hot, and always $1.29 for a large cup.

And I always saw someone I knew in town. It’s still there. Feel free to enjoy - though, with inflation, it might be up to $1.50 these days…

Or like having an ICE car with a HPFP and not letting the tank get below 1/4...
Just more nonsense. You can take ANY ICE vehicle, fill the tank to the brim, and run it until it's on fumes, in any weather or temperature. It will take the same amount of time to fill up regardless if it's 90 F, or -20 F.

And it can sit for weeks in the cold, and start no problem. I lived and drove in extreme Winters for 28 years. EV's are not cut out for the cold.

The coldest states have the fewest of these monstrosities registered. There is a reason for that. And it's not because they perform so wonderfully in frigid climate.

Is that anywhere near the scope of the EV mess? Or was that one random exception? I have not heard of Canadians unable to pump gas.

Given the entire Midwest East and Canada had the same weather and we only heard one report from a few places in Chicago that were closest to Ohare - what was the scope - really?

My family has a summerhome in Lake Of The Woods, Ontario. Just north of Nestor Falls. So, for curiosity, I have Nestor Falls' weather along with my home's (about 50mi west of Chicago) weather on my phone. You would think the weather up there would be more cold than here but it's rarely the case. We have a warm day today (22*F) but typically it's actually colder in the Chicagoland area than it is there. Now they get more snow by an enormous margin, but the temperature is usually quite close. The one thing I've noticed over the years is the cold up there is much more steady than here. It'll be -5*F for a week up there but here will be -15 one day, +10 the next, -5 the next, +30 the next, back down to -6.

My point is that just because they're north than many of us doesn't always mean it's a drastically different temperature.

And I'll admit that Calgary (as stated in that news clip) is WAYYY far off from Nestor Falls, geographically.

No it was not limited to Chicago. It's where ever it got below 0F more or less. it's simple battery chemistry.
Agree, some of these other comments surprise me. Your are 100% correct, Chicago just happened to be the best place for media coverage. Gosh posted all over these threads of the past week are documented instances (and pure science) of the limits of these vehicles in cold weather.

This is where wind chill will affect them too. The biggest issue other than they are rated at 25C and anything under or over reduces capacity was getting the dead battery up to temp to condition it for a fast charge. So 30 mph wind at -20F can be a futile effort.

And the air that hit the upper US was the coldest on the planet at the time with a dislocated Polar Vortex.

Whether EV fans like it or not, this weeks freeze episode has dealt a blow to the EV mania. Random people who don't yet own one but were considering buying it is seeing this mess unfold on TV and other media are definitely rethinking EV's purchases now.
They would be stupid not to rethink it. Watching the news, reading, and listening to people in the know is all part of doing your homework when you're considering purchasing a high ticket item like an EV.

Another thing is the Chicago video was near O'Hare and many were people who had been gone for a while, retuning and finding the cold dead cars. Fly those friendly skies.....

I have a garage but I rarely put my leaf in it on account of thr small possiblity of having a battery fire that can't be put out and would put off smoke that would render my house uninhabitable.

Nothing unusual from anywhere else that hasn't been the norm for about a decade.

There's always someone somewhere that fails to prepare.

I did park the ID.4 outside the garage when I had it and used my sprinker system plug which was near the front to get an L1 charge. It was not due to the possibility of fire though. Rather, the Queen's car goes in the garage and whatever I am driving goes outside.

Right now there are more than 2000 flight delays due to cold. These airplanes aren’t quite quite ready for prime time, just like electric cars.
