I don't 'get' the moderation on this board....

Drew-it's pretty simple. Be a stand up guy and abide by the rules you agreed to when you signed up and there won't be any issues.

Skirt or break the rules and you'll get posts locked or worse (just as you were warned when you signed up).

Maintain a bit of self control and don't post or respond to anything RSP and you'll not have problems. It does require a certain level of maturity to maintain that self control though.

It's Helens sandbox and we're obligated to play by the rules or take our toys and go home. The choice really is yours.
 
Being a mod isn't easy. Mostly you're a janitor in a real neat library ..but occasionally there's a mess to take care of. You can't be here full time and it's very hard (impossible) to view every post. It can stifle your own posting to a decent degree. You don't want to appear punitive and you wish everyone would just leave such issues alone ..but they never do ..so a border line post that is mostly apolitical starts about some regulation ..and it goes for a bit ..then someone has to throw a political sting into it ..and most leave it be ..then another ..and then a perfectly good discussion gets trashed for a couple of cheap shots. Some do it on purpose ..or so it would seem

Yeah right, who would want transparency? Having deniability in regard to what was discussed in private is also very useful! I now keep copies (screenshots) of all "private discussions" with moderators.

I helps in senate hearings when the official documents have been shredded. That way, they can try and set you up as the fall guy ..but you're assured to take someone else down with you.

The moderators do a very good job, typically letting threads go as long as possible before someone blows themselves and the thread up. There use to be a right leaning slant but it seems less so now.

Hats off to the moderators.

You have 16 posts - you don't know anything about this board...

My issue is that IMO, there is a clear bias as to what threads get locked, and what threads/posts stay.

I don't see it as uneven handed, Drew ..and I think that I would (of all people = Mr. Paradigm Destroyer, himself). I've got my fair share of PM's from time to time.

There might be a bias created by the political leanings of the users who might notify about a particular thread. eg. If there are a lot of lefties around, a rightie thread will be more likely to be Notified, and locked. Someone may have already said this, but I'm too tired to read through everything. It's very hard to correct such a bias, unless you only give Notification powers to a set of individuals who are trained to maintain zero bias.

I used to think that way until relatively recently.

Personally, I now think that there is bias in the people who report posts to the admin, bringing particular posts and threads to their attention.

Once the R/S/P things are under their noses, they have to act.

And you need to grow up. I've been reading this board longer than you have. I simply don't feel the need to post 24/7.

Again, grow up and be a real man and abide by the rules. Or act like a defiant juvenile (crybaby) and continue to post RSP.

Well, Mark, if something is just going overboard ..jumping into foul territory, there's no shame in flagging it. It's the nature of social groups to test their limits. I see it daily with the youth groups. You see a few kids having fun ..responsibly ..and then a few others who figure just a little reckless is not all that far from what the other guy is doing ...then you get an escalation to an out of control situation.

It's no different with adults.

I would like to say, that after careful consideration, I feel that Drew was mistaken in classifying MarkC as a "lefty".

I believe MarkC is an iron clad cynic. He questions all beliefs and philosophies. It's not a bad thing.

I'm with Gary and the others, I think the moderators do a fine job. Actually, before JHZ posted above I didn't realize how much flagging was going on to cause mods to look into a particular post, and with that said I think the set of threads which do and don't get locked/deleted makes more sense. I enjoy the civilized atmosphere here and don't think the mods are out to get anyone or abuse their "power". Honestly, I come here for the subject matter and I don't really care about political or religious threads.

That being said I have two points I keep coming back to whenever I think about the board's policies:

1) The censorship software is hilariously strict. In fact, it's so ridiculous that I wouldn't want to see it go away because it makes the board more fun. Whenever anyone says a mild "bad" word and it comes through as "[censored]" instead my brain automatically fills it in with the foulest language that fits in context, which I find amusing.

2) This is the internet, not saturday morning cartoons. I am an adult, have a strong stomach, like my movies rated R and my books and music uncensored. I'm not bothered by swearing, could not care less what anyone thinks about Obama or GW Bush, and am not riled up by arguments on the internet. In my humble opinion, the strict content policies on the site are misguided. But, obviously, it's a private forum and the rules are the rules.

For my part, there are forums (tech related, not auto related) I go to that have almost no content rules and the discussions do not generally degrade into uselessness. The conclusion I've come to is that BITOG is just not the place for that kind of discussion.
