...I really don't.

Someone started a post on comments made by Paris Hilton on energy and Obama's plans, and it got shut down less than 2 pages of very 'light', 1-lign slightly political, joking comments....but right now, we have a 4-plus page thread going on about CITGO being involved in coffee growing/marketing, and its full of comments about dictatorships, legalization of drugs...etc...

I know, I know, if I don't like the moderation, leave the board. I don't have a problem w/the board moderation - in fact, I think they do an EXCELLENT job of making this one of the most civilized board on the web. I really do. Just sometimes, the moderation seems a bit knee-jerk, without giving a topic 'a chance'...

Just an observation!

are ya kidding me! This forum has threads getting pulled left and right...I bet my post and this thread gets pulled.

It's bad.

Any post I make that even mentions a politician gets locked.

Don't get on the moderator's bad side or you'll get locked up "left" and right...

Where do you think a thread containing 'energy plan' and 'Obama' would go? Come on now....

The Citgo thread is pretty non-political, so for now it lives.

Dargo,

I'll bet you lunch your post won't get pulled. Why would it?

If you see my handle on a moderation, don't hesitate sending me a polite PM asking what happened if you really don't understand what happened. That is much better than a public questioning of the moderation.

Drew,

Have you ever attempted to set rules and moderate a large internet forum? There HAS to be rules or chaos will ensue. It just so happens that one of the hard and fast rules of BITOG is that there will be no discussion of RSP.

If a user follows the board rules, they will not 'get on the bad side of the mods'. You have read the rules right?

Drew, you're on my good side and I will lock your posts as fast as anyone's if you get to far into RSP.

All the righties here would bash him for 10 pages, then someone like MarkC or I would intervene and it would get locked.

Drew,

Show us an example where this has happened.

I suspect, but I don't run the place, the reason political discussions are not allowed is because instead of discussing the issues, it turns into personal attacks.

It happens on both sides I'm sure.

Folks today don't know how to discuss an issue without attacking another person.

For example, if I say I'm against a particular policy, instead of debating the merits of my position, those who disagree with me simply call me someone who is full of hate..

That's why in my opinion, the powers to be here do not allow political debate.

Dissent is not hatred. But those who don't have a better argument often try to paint anyone's dissent as hatred, or attack the person instead of his/her arguments.

For that reason, I don't believe folks can have a good debate.

So if I say I'm against policy "Y" and someone else is for policy "Y" Instead of offering an argument for policy "Y" or addressing my reasons not to support policy "Y" my opponent will try to make the debate about me, or how I "should" be perceived. I.E. those narrow minded hateful opponents of policy "Y".... might come from the mouth, pen or keyboard of someone who doesn't agree with me.

And largely, as a society, we let this happen. We don't stop the folks who make these statements and ask them what their likely baseless personal attack has to do with the topic. We don't ask them why they feel or believe the only way to advance their agenda is to attack those who disagree.

I IMMEDIATELY treat with suspicion those who attack, instead of laying out a logical support for their position. I wonder why they have to attack? Is their position really so weak that the best choice of action is to attack those who disagree?

When I see bumper stickers questioning the intelligence of elected officials, of either party, I cringe.

And the general populace keeps eating it up.

I see little evidence that we as a society have critical reasoning skills. We may have them, but I can't see them. When politics is more about emotion than it is about substance it's hard to believe that we are a nation of rational, critical thinkers.

We may be, as I really cannot know everyone. But given the way it appears candidates and those who support them go about arguing their positions, it really doesn't appear they are appealing to reason.

And because it appears reason is out the window, it's probably wise to disallow political discourse here.

Apparently you guys don't go through the oil industry and news section - Al Gore gets dragged through the mud there quite a bit.

A couple of months ago a Texan dude was let go after he had killed two people.

There were two posts about it. I started one that was critical of the decision and qualified what the guy had done as pre-meditated murder. That thread was promptly deleted.

The other one praised him for getting rid of two immigrants. That thread did not disappear and grew quite popular.

I still don't know what the reasoning behind these two decisions was.

Helen has a strong no R/S/P policy.

What the typical user on this site does not see is the complaints that may or may not show up from YOUR PEERS on specific threads, posts, comments, etc. Many if not most moderator actions take place because of folks sending notifications.

If the lefties are upset about a righty action/post/etc. then flag it, send a notification, and if it is found to be political in nature, or whatever else, it will be dealt with. If there are cases where this did not happen, flag them and they will be dealt with.

The mods on here are hard-working everyday individuals. When we work this site, we do so on our breaks, our lunchtimes, our time relaxing at home. It is not our day job - we do it because we enjoy this site. We want to make sure it remains an enjoyable place for people to come to talk about oil and engine-related topics. And given the fact that some members do flag a lot of things, obviously many of your peers like the way that the board does not turn into a buinch of foul idiots heckeling each other.

So keep in mind the no R/S/P rules (there is at least one BITOG spinoff board for those topics), and then help us help you. The moderators strive for an unbiased operation and moderation of the board, per Helen's guidelines. We are only human and there are only 24 hours in the day. Within that, help us help you, make it clear when something is viewed as unfair, and we will do our best.

Likely the one was flagged and the other wasnt, or the language and points on one were far more severe than the other.

The squeeky wheel gets the oil. Id love to read every thread through post by post, but I cant. Flag it if you see it... If you did, my apologies, it should have been dealt with better.

Whenever I go into work, you know, what pays for the internet connection, I have to work for an uninformed pinhead boss who is also politically my opposite. And he's wrong. (I can prove it with charts and graphs and nonpartisan citations.) But I don't get into it. Our field of work is not politics so there's no reason to bring it up. So we live and let live and try not to think about it.

So if I'm promoting candidate X one day and giving mechanical advice the next, someone may not take my advice seriously b/c of my hippie leanings or whatever.

RSP all fire off the same synapsis in the brain that say "I'm right dangit" and you're not going to convert anyone anyway... all you'll do is drag the both of you all down in the mud.

I bet, BTW, if someone went looking for a political forum, they'd get sick of bickering on a "neutral" one and settle into one that thinks they way they do. Then when "everybody" they talk to is on their side, they're befuddled when the general election turns out so differently.

And of course it's simpler. Like visiting a girl you'd like to date, and you meet her parents, it's not your house, not your rules, so either go off on your own or show some respect even if you're faking it long enough to make it to the driveway.
