I was driving up the Taconic State parkway in NY on Monday. There are 3 northbound lanes.

I'm in the middle lane doing about 65, I looked in my mirror and saw this yellow streak approaching. He passes me on the right and then moves in front of me. It's an Explorer doing about 85.

He passes the cars in front of me in the left and center lanes by going right between them on the broken lane divider.

I don't know how an accident was avoided or why this jackarse would even try this.

I hope when he kills himself no one else is a victim.

would it be unreasonable of me to ask youre age and youre best guess of the estimated age of the person driving th yellow suv?

Surprisingly enough age doens't matter that much. I've seen 16 year old punks (or should I say unexperienced teenagers) doing stunts worse than that. But what scares me the most is then the same stunts are done by 30-40-50 year olds. I just hate driving in California. 60% of the drivers don't speak english (i.e. can't read signs), seems like at least 50% of the total number of drivers don't know the simple driving rules and safety precautions, and like 20% are illigal immigrants without any driving licenses (sehabla espaniol senior?). For what I know cops don't wright enough tickets. They probably should triple their efforts.
Visited San-Francisco today...

Gosh it's at least 5 times worse than bay area in general. Do they even know that cars have turning signals?
Groucho, unfortunately stunts like you described are everyday reality here. You could probably notice 2-5 moves like that on 20 miles of a freeway. Even more in city.

Well, I guess I have been driving longer than I have not. I have seen quite a bit of aggressive driving with a number of "rice burners" .

I couldn't see who this driver was as he was by in a flash.

If he had to make the smallest, and I mean smallest adjustment, while driving. at that point the Explorer would have rolled.

The fact that someone would try this with an Explorer is what disturbed me the most.

The Taconic is a tight little road that becomes a raceway. I took it from Westchester up to its end in our company car. It was packed, fast and full of quick corners, tight lanes and maniac drivers. I just wish I had a better driving car than the Taurus.

I saw someone race around a left turn in an Envoy, tires-a-squeelin' the other day. Drives me nuts!

These people have no consideration for how top-heavy their vehicles are. I recently saw one of these same vehicles on it's side after a crash.

I took the Taconic from Albany down to Lafayetteville, NY on my way to Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day. Great drive ... but far too tempting to go over 60mph ... especially in a Sentra SpecV 6-speed.

Cops were all over the place pulling people over. Thankfully, I kept my speed in check and was able to get to the track and back without getting a ticket.

Something else to watch out for on the Taconic is deer ... unless you like venison and don't mind paying thousands of $$$ for 1 deer's worth.

Saw two hit deer that day.

There is no doubt about it, idiots come in all ages, and driving anything that can lurch onto the road. In energy crisis one, Car and Driver proposed a gas mileage based speed limit. The idea was that some cars get better mileage at 80 than others do at 50. Maybe we could base it on momentum. If we allow a 3000 pound car to go 80, the 2500 pound rice burner could do almost 100, and the 4000 SUV would be limited to 60. All would do comparable damage to anything they hit.

When my children were learning to drive, I warned them about Cadilacs. I explained that you don't want to get behind most of them, but the really dangerous ones are the ones you don't want to be in front of. That was before they started building trucks. I also emphasized staying out of the way of a cop in a hurry.

A friend once asked me to drive one of the Dingo Scout cars he had purchased from the Customs lot to his place of business. I found it amazing how courteous other drivers were in letting me make lane changes. Possibly because they couldn't see that there was no MG in the turret!

this is why i don't carry a gun - i might use it. like, when some dumbass pulls out in front of you and then proceeds to drive 10 under. or when someone just blazes through the cross road stop sign out in the country. nothing a warning shot to the back of the head wouldn't fix.
