Are they really needed on modern automatic cars? The rev limiter on newer cars will not let you past the redline anyway...

As an interesting side note my 2007 made me a believer tonight after a 30+ minute pursuit through some extremely nasty terrain (rough county roads at 60mph and an excursion onto a 2500 acre farm through logging trails and seedling wheat fields with eight inch deep mud).
The farm owners jaws were on the floor when they realized what I drove through.

Tachs cost money. Besides, all these cars are automatics. If they had a tach, I'd ask, why would they?

Running a tach now is just 50 cents worth of a computer output d/a spot, a moving needle, and a designer to put it somewhere. Why they don't put it in a marquis? Probably the 90 year old ladies not wearing their glasses would see "20" and think they were going a lot slower. (j/k, but their study groups probably found tachs intimidating or confusing-- these same people put in the fake oil pressure "gauge" in ford trucks)
offtopic, but back in the day they used to lock out 1st gear on the automatics b/c cops would get excited and slam the shifter down to 2nd for a manual kickdown. Bet this is done electronically now.

Good point. I call mine a Gramp Marquis. Grandma and Grandpa ain't interested in a "tach"! I'm not either when driving an automatic transmission.
Then again, my 2053cc V-twin Motorcycle doesn't come with a tach...which only makes sense if you consider the massive torque it has at relatively low rpms...and that it doesn't care much what gear you are in, if you twist the throttle it goes pretty well...
