I'd get a UOA and see what the results are. A spirited drive on the Highway once a week would help, but those short trips can be tough on any oil. I'd stick with a good synthetic like what you are using now. How long does it take you to get to 5k miles?
ZOOMZOOM is right.A 5w20 Synthic or better yet a Blend would work.Plus do what i do>Since my girfriends Explorer dosen't see much highway driving doing the week we go to brunch every Sunday 40 miles away.The food is great and it does wounders for the Explorer.Plus traffic is usalley alot lighter on Sunday so i can keep a steady 70mph or higher.

Hmm engine must one killer on oil then if it sludged with synthetic at 5,000 OCI. I dint realize this engine was that Hard on oil. Id probably run a synthetic then and do Oil anylsis at regular intervals to see were your oil is starting to become unacceptable to use.
If the question is -- what is the best oil for your situation? The answer is any good 0/5W-20 oil.

5w20's may be good for most cars, but VW's tend to like more robust oils. I'd stick with 5w40 or something similar with the correct VW rating. Keep in mind your same car in Deutschland prolly comes from the dealer with 15w40 in it, despite being in a cooler climate.
As for short trips, take your car out once a week and run it really good. I mean REALLY good, it needs, no, it BEGS to be red-lined and taken through the gears at a brisk pace and yearns for a nice brisk highway run.
I do lots of short trips during the week. Last night i changed the spark plugs in my mazda (new NGK Iridiums) cleaned the throttle intake and air cleaner, then took it out on the highway for some full throttle starts from 0 to 80 mph and mid-level punches from 40mph to 80 mph at full throttle. The new Iridiums and cleaned up throttle body really made the mazda 2.5 v6 come alive.
I hope i didnt thrash my havoline 5w30 too much
