The 98 Corvette I just bought last weekend has a K&N air filter in it, and I have decided to continue to run it for at least 5000 miles, and will decide if I should keep it or not once I get my first UOA. I hope I don't regret it!

If silicon is too high, I'll immediately switch to the stock AC Delco filter.

It's not impossible to see low silicon with the K&N, we've got a few posted UOAs on here, so I'm crossing my fingers that I will be one of them.

Do a UOA with each and compare the result. Make sure to take a good look at the K&N and make sure the seal is intact and working properly.

Good call. I've had one in my 2002 Maxima. Did a UOA at 30K miles (filter in for 20k, no cleaning) and the Si was not only normal but lower than normal.

I took a quick peek at it the other day and it appears to be sealed up very nicely. The Corvette airbox is very solid, there isn't much chance of anything getting past it (in fact it's a very restrictive piece, so I'm going to have to do something about that)

I'm not sure what my upper limit on silicon will be where I begin to panic, I guess I'll just let Terry Dyson do the read and get his opinion on it. I just realized that the silicon could show up high but most of it could be the additives in GC, so if the other metals are reasonable then I won't worry.

There is a Chance of good results depending on your application. I agree with T-Keith, take a good look at the filter as the seals do sometimes come apart.

I also use a K&N type filter, the Air Hog, and i will soon be getting a UOA and see how it performs, i have good spirits that it will do a fine job.

Patman,
as a test put a couple of dabs of grease downstream of the K&N in the air stream to the throttle body. Any dirt or dust that gets by will stick to it. One way to know how good the filter is.
Make sure u drive through some dusty/road dirt environments, to load up that grease.
This is what one of the BMW motorcycle riders clubs did. The result was they do not use K&N anymore.
