I'm wanting to go look at a 2011 Sonata. I ran the vin to see the recalls, and it has several that have not been completed.

One of which, is the metal shavings left in manufacturing. The remedy to this is for the dealership to replace the engine. I believe it said parts are available. The recall repair has not yet happened (car is for sale at a Nissan dealer).

Would I be stupid to not pick this thing up and get a new engine for free? It's only $6500.

Just checking to make sure that they are actually replacing the engine in these.

Did you try calling up a local Hyundai service dept and giving them the VIN to see what they have to say?

I'd like to know whether this is an automatic engine replacement or whether they just inspect it and if they see no damage/issue, then they leave it at that.

The service bulletin calls for an inspection and if the vehicle fails the inspection then it is submitted for engine replacement.

If it passes inspection (simply listening for knock) then the vehicle receives and extended warranty. I'm not certain what the parameters of that.

Your almost to nirvana. 2012+ Camry is what you want. Dont waste your time with could bes or might haves. Good luck.

2011 Sonata for only $6500? How many miles? Very risky? Are you sure Hyundai will honor the warranty esp since you are buying it from a Nissan dealership? Second owners only have 60k mile warranty not the 100k.

And it's only 5 years, so it's probably not applicable anyway. I'm guessing the OP is not buying it for the warranty aspect of it.

118k miles, 2.4L. It isn't a matter of warranty. It's a recall so it could have 500k miles and it would be covered.

More research on this looks like they do indeed have to inspect it to hear if it has a knock. If so, engine replacement. If not, they send you on your merry way.

I have a 2011 Sonata with the recall still open. They most certainly will not give you a new engine automatically. As previously stated, the remedy is "listen" inspection. If it passes, they replace the dipstick with an orange handled one that causes the engine to be filled with slightly more oil and extend the powertrain warranty to 120,000 miles. That's it.

Also, you can bet that if your car fails the test and gets an engine replacement, it will be an overhauled unit, not a new one.

Would it still be worth the purchase if it passed their inspection and didn't repair anything? What I'm trying to say is, could these metal shavings hurt the longevity of the car.

If its got 118k miles, any potential damage would have manifested itself already.

I've got 107,000 on mine and it seems fine, save for some oil consumption. I've switched to VML and it seems to be helping.

So? What's wrong with a (factory) rebuilt engine?
