The owners manual even gives instructions on how to remove the badges.
Real M car drivers tend to leave them. I have a feeling Hyundai drivers are embarrassed.

It's the owners doing it, but I think part of the blame falls on BMW.

...why can I order the "M Sport Package" which is wheels and badges, on a 320d?

Same with the people that debadge there 328i, change for bigger wheels, and put a loud resonator on. Who they think they fooling?

Some of the badge swaps look kind of neat, and I'm not a logo guy.
I think the veloster is an interesting enough car, but not pretentious, so people don't feel bad about modding the look to whatever they feel like.
I sure the odd guy fools around with badges on more iconic cars, but gets flak from everyone about it.

The worst ones I see are the wannabe ghetto white boys with their old worn out Chevrolet trucks with Cadillac emblems swapped out for the Chevy bow tie. That looks comedic! They also always have rubber band tires and are blasting hip hop to the point of distortion. The dude inside always has a shaved head,is anorexic skinny, and all tattooed up. I always point and laugh.

I was going to mention this as well, but KD0AXS beat me to it. The Tiburon is known by another name that I couldn't remember until he mentioned it.

Some Contour enthusiasts were looking for Mondeo badging, since the CDW-27 platform was known as the Mondeo elsewhere in the world.

I agree. It's more a personal style thing. It's not like a Veloster with changed badges looks like anything else.

(Although I have seen US owners buying the Australian 'SR' badge.)

True, but this is the very specific replacement of the brand badge with something else. It isn't that the badge or other identifiers are simply being removed, rather they are being swapped.

I have not observed this practice on any other marque.

Actually, I've seen this done on several makes and if they're just doing it to customize the car then it probably doesn't involve any self-loathing.

Seeing replacement logos and badges that are official and unofficial and in several colors is not a daily occurrence, but not an unusual event either...in these parts at least. Custom shops have their own badge & logo replacements and it seems Alibaba sells variations up the yang. Toyota has a campaign with raised 3D badges reflecting milestones / events they support, etc. that I've seen that are sold at the dealership. You wouldn't recognize these as being from Toyota. There is a Nismo ( Nissan ) replacement badge on a car just up the street from me and this car also has a custom shop logo to replace what was on the trunk. These generally look like [censored] to me but I probably see fewer Hyundai's doing this than cars from Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

My BIL wasted no time to debadge his new Hyundai Genesis to the Korean home market "Bentley" style badge. The Toronto dealer even did the swap for him!

Too many people still remember the Pony....and that doesn't jive with a $40k ++ sedan from this brand.

If Hyundai keeps on doing the right stuff, this problem will go away within 5 years.

Yes, i've seen it on the Veloster's and it's referenced on the Veloster boards (i used to own one). They are swapping out the Hyundai emblem for the Hyundai Genesis Winged one.

Maybe this is what you saw? I have no idea what it's all about.

Reminds me of the Mahindra logo for some reason.

Almost anyone knows a M car from a 316i with a louder exhaust. LOL

These ones shown in the thread I linked are the ones I saw on the Veloster in Toronto (the first car I saw with this treatment):

A lot of people on the Buick Regal forum are fans of replacing all the Buick badges with ones for its European version, the Opel Insignia. Darned if I can figure it out, except that I guess they think it'll add more "cachet."

I was always amused by that. When I had the Buick Park Avenue, I thought of having it debadged and adding the legend "S380" on the trunk, just to see what people (who've been conditioned by the letter-number setup on Benzes and BMWs, for example) would say. Never did it, though.

I bet there are many Germans who would love to replace their mundaine Opel badges with exotic Buick badges.

We have customers coming in wanting to put GT500 badges on their V6 Mustangs. Even though they are regularly sourced parts, I have been tempted to tell them that I need a valid VIN with proof of ownership to order them. More than once have I been told by the import street racer kids about all the "V6 GT Mustangs" or "GT500V6 Mustangs" they have "smoked" with their stock Civic.

Nearly every enthusiast group does this...

VW Jetta as a VW Bora
Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet SS with Holden grill and badges
Saturn Astra with Opel Astra grill and badges
Buick Regal with Opel Insignia grill and badges
Toyota FR-S with GT86 badges
Acura NSX/Integra with Honda badges
Acura RSX with Honda Integra badges
Subaru Impreza with "I" badge replacing the Subaru pleiades badge
Nissan 240SX with Silvia badges and bodywork
Lexus IS300 with Altezza badges

I'm sure Niki would have been really happy to have his name attached to some of those contraptions they imported many years ago.
