Hydraulic vs engine filters

Just installed an automatic transmission spin on (full flow) filter on my Ford Explorer. They use a Ford style regular engine filter to do the job. Would it be possible to use a hydraulic filter with it's finer filtration to do a better clean? Or should I just choose the Amsoil SDF 15 at change time? Filter dimensions are : thread- 3/4 X 16
ID gasket- 2.46... OD gasket- 2.81... Bypass pressure 7-9 PSI. Thanks in advance.

I would not use a hyd. filter cause they are a bypass type and will starve your trans. of atf.

Brio, I was thinking, yea hurts sometimes. The hydralic filters are rated for 20 gallons per minute for log splitter use, if they operate in bypass mode at that flow rate and filter the 5 mic crud, what would restrict flow if used on the trans filter set up? I would like to get the most grit out of the oil and the primary filter in the tranny can handle the birds and small rocks and the bypass operation would be great for the smaller stuff.

I'm a little late to this post but the Hydraulic return line (spin-on) filters are not by-pass filters. They are full flow filters. Unlike automotive filters they do not contain a bypass valve inside the filter, its contained in the head unit and can be specified usually as 15, or 25 psi. Some can also be specified with an ADBV. These filters would be an excellent choice for a change out as they are rated for high flow and can be gotten in I will be adding these hydraulic filters to both my trans and engine oil soon.

I must correct myself after looking at your original post. Since your filter has the bypass valve internal to the filter a hydralic filter probably wouldn't be a great choice since it won't have a bypass valve in it.

I wouldn't bother with the overpriced AMS oil filter. The Pure One, Fram TG, AC, or Baldwin all provide very good filtration for less.
 
I have been using Parker Hyd. Spin-ons for auto trannys in truck and automotive service for years now. Got one in the power steering loop on 2 units as well. I use the 20 GPM 3 micron unit, get them from WW Grainger for around 25 bucks head & filter, $14 for element, their number 4ZC86. Pull the pan, it is clean on the bottom! Oil is crystal clear.
25 PSID bypass setting, you should never lift it with a tranny cooling loop, and these filters are big for the application.
