Hummingbird Migration

I put my feeders out today, i should have had them out a couple of weeks ago. We just had i think our last 32F night a week ago.

We have Anna huming birds year round, Rufus should turn up anyday now.

I was at the local dump a few days back and tried to count Bald Eagles, I estimated 50 in one tree alone !

We have ruby throated, they leave middle of oct and return about now. I put one of my feeders out in an open field, hopefully to be spotted as they come back.

Wow wish we had eagles here in those numbers. Just one here and there.

I have one or two hummingbirds that never left. I am up in the Southern California mountains and left one of my feeders out last fall as I still saw a few birds on it each day. I have even seen a bird hovering around it waiting for the nectar to thaw after an overnight freeze.

I also have a crazy woodpecker who thinks he is a hummingbird and hangs upside down on it and swings it enough that the nectar slops out of the tiny holes and into the fake flower shaped parts and then sticks his beak in for a drink. Last year I didn't start to see several hummingbirds at a time until late May/early June.

Hooray! Saw 1 male ruby throat at my feeder. So i placed some nesting material out. I bought a pound of raw cotton. Will see if they use it.

I had what I thought was a hummingbird visiting my front garden this week, well it turned out to be a hummingbird moth. Pretty darn neat!

im in central louisiana and we havent had the numbers we usually do. during covid it got warm quick that year and we had tons of them, this year it stayed cooler longer and still havent seen many.

Our first Hummingbird got back on May 4, only 3 days later than last year. We had the feeder freshly stocked up. We’ll have them for the very special next four months. :)
Every year a hummingbird comes up to me to let me know I’d better get the feeder out. Most of the time I’m sitting in the garage or on the deck and he hovers in front of my face.

Have not seen any in 2 days. I will probably go from 4 feeders to just 2 out for the ones that might migrate by.

Question is, would it be better to have my red feeders out in an open field where they can be seen from the air? Or are the migrating birds used to seeing them near the house? My field is surrounded by woods.
They will find them wherever they are. No need to put in open field. I am in San Diego area and have them year round with seasonal peaks. Those 5 lb (now 4 lb) bags of sugar don't last long with my wife's love of birds. Does Costco sell a 25 or 50 lb bag? 😊
