Thanks to this site, I now feel the need to run to my aunt's house to do an oil change.

My aunt is running an old tired 99 Ford Winstar w/ nearly 189k on the clock. At this point, I know the engine burns oil, just not sure how much. (She drives a bunch and rarely checks). I know she does change her oil, usually on the far edge (aprox 5-8k OCIs on dino at the local shop-my guess would be service pro oil)

Anyways, she had to top up about a bit over a half a quart. So she stops at the gas station and puts a half a quart of EVERCLEAR ( one of those "bad" oils) 5w30 in there. Boy, she got a touguelashing for that one....Van is showing no ills, and seems to be okay (right now), and thank goodness is due for an oil change soon. Should I bother sweating it, or just let it slide until she changes it next week?

Let it slide.

You are waaaay to concerned. I bet that [censored] new oil is still better than the used up old oil that has been in the car for too long.

IMO.....Let it slide, since it's only a half a quart. When you have a chance....give it some HM Dino or synthetic blend. Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline, Castrol or even SuperTech from WM should help it out with consumption after a few changes. Get what ever is the best price at the time or if you see a great deal....load up for your Aunt.

You'll be a great nephew for helping her out......

that oil does not even meet the requirements for API SC!! "not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automotive engines built after 1967." it's not just [censored] oil, it's oil with NO TBN and contaminants in it!

i would change it ASAP as it might possibly damage her engine

Be a nice guy and change her oil for her. Yow will feel better about putting good oil in her van and will NOT have to give her a ride in the near future
