How worn and stained does a car repair shirt have to get before you toss it?

My problem is I forget to don said work shirt before I start working on something,

Now have too many work shirts.

When the collar has continuous wear-through (ie inside and outside are no longer attached) a shirt gets converted to "septic service". They get hung in a separate closet and don't come back from that. One wear and they're done.

If the collar is only worn through here and there (ie not continuous) I wear it to the museum restoration shop. It's quite likely to get spray paint, grease, oil or a snag there. I patch small tears in long sleeved shirts (using iron on patches - on the inside of course) and wear them to the museum too.

Its 100 degrees down here
Yeah so what? Look at a fireperson with all the garb they wear. Try wearing coveralls in that 100, and sitting on a machine that is radiating its 180 degree operating temperature all around you as well, and your face full of dusty dirt, and wearing the now popular mask as well. Oh yeah it was fun, 10 to 12 hours of it.

i don’t toss until most of the back is exposed or i catch the front on fire welding/grinding.

I will wash a stained shirt but I'm not allowed to put it in the dryer. That shirt has miles left in it. That shirt would last another 32 years. (two generations in Alabama.) Flame suit on.
Daughter's husband in pavement business and he would wash his work clothes and dry them in their washer & dryer. Daughter would get tar stuff on her nice blouses.

He now has a washer & dryer and shower at his shop.

Haha, while in Daytona Beach my roommate and I were wearing car-repair clothes and riding motorcycles to purchase car parts.

While riding down Volusia Blvd, A nice guy pulled up and gave Rich $20 and said: "Here, go get yourself a clean pair of pants" and drove off! We were both really broke college kids back then, so it really helped out. Still laugh at it today!

I guess we looked worse than we thought!

As long as the holes are not too big, I keep using them no matter how much paint or oil stained they are.

This one is still good. It actually went out in public today too. Gas station and liquor store after some yard work. Pic is pre wear.
