I cannot figure out how to remove the cover over the two light bulbs.

Is this Liebherr similar to yours:

You push up and back to disconnect the light cover.

I never could figure out why 40 watt bulbs are used in refrigerators, LED's would work just as well without the heat of 80 watts of power.
Now that led bulbs are widely available, it makes sense to use them and avoid the heat from incandescent bulbs.

This Liebherr came from the factory with led bulbs. You can see them faintly through the frosted glass shield

My 2 yr old Whirlpool has screw in LED bulbs, standard socket. I just put new light boards in a friends 10 yr old Whirlpool, integrated LEDs, flashing light issues. Old 40 appliance incandescents were the industry standard as the appliance bulb has a smaller glass ''footprint'' and was common across many product lines so it took a while to phase them out. I guess like 1157 car bulbs.
