looking at a used 2007 G6 with 3.5L 6 cylinder. Is this a reliable auto?

I know of 2 people with them, one is a GXP and other a GT but both are 2007's. One has 21,000 and the other 13,000 and no drivetrain problems. Both love the car. One did have to have a door window motor replaced under warranty but otherwise good cars so far.

The new 3.5L LZ4 engine with variable valve timing seems to be a very reliable and fuel efficient engine. They now use durable metal framed intake manifild gaskets to solve the interal leak fiasco that the 3.1L and 3.4L motors had.

I've got 2 '06's, a base 2.4, and a 3.5 GT. Both are good cars, the GT gets slightly better fuel mileage.

No real problems so far, my daugter has 75k miles on the 2.4, and my wife has 40k on the GT.

Good rear seat room for the size car it is.

The 2.4 gets around 30 hwy, the GT about 32.

Funny this thread came up. I was just given a 2008 Accord for a loaner while my Yukon is getting warranty work done. Well a friend of mine was down a little while ago and rented a 06 G6. I like it much more than the Accord. I am not impressed with this Accord at all. It is the 4 cyl so I would figure this but it has no power even though the engine is very smooth for a 4 cyl. The G6 had a nicer interior. It felt like the materials were better IMO. I liked almost everything better about the G6 than this Accord. I have driven Honda's before and liked them. This Accord seems cheaper than the older ones I have driven. So anyway I was just saying to my friends that I don't know why anybody would buy the Accord over the G6. IMO of coarse.

You mean GM can build a reliable, good looking, well performing car that people actually enjoy!? You'd never know it after reading the many GM related threads over the last couple of years here on BITOG.

I have read raving reviews about the new Chevy Malibu. I believe it's the same platform as the G6

I've complained about GM probably more than anyone here, but they're getting their act together (maybe a wee bit too late!).

All the new V-6s have much improved cooling system sealing, are powerful, and get impressive fuel economy.

My mom recently got a tick over 34 mpg going from Colorado Springs to Denver and back in her 07 Impala, all highway - 75 mph with the A/C on.

The LZ4/LZ9 (3500VVT/3900VVT) do not run any coolant through the intake manifold. There is also a 3500 non-VVT, the LX9, that uses the older design where coolant flows through the manifold, but is supposedly improved and should not leak.

Unless GM has switched to the LZ4 in the G6 GT (the LZ9 went into the GTP until they changed over to the 3600), they're still using the LX9 as far as I know. It wouldn't surprise me if they've changed to the LZ4. It's a superior engine in many ways.

Drew99GT, the mileage of the latest generation W-cars is nothing but impressive. My 2006 Monte Carlo has 82 more HP and 50 or so more torque than my 1997 Monte, but still manages to do a few MPG better on average. On a highway drive it's easy for me to pull 30 mpg if I don't actually use all 242hp. I'm sure if I had the LZ4 I could pull 32-33 all the time easily.

I haven't seen a definitive answer on this, so I just checked my mom's Impala with the LZE (same engine but flex fuel) and it in fact looks like it has a dry intake manifold! Looks like no coolant passages through the intake. Plus, the thermostat is on the outlet side of the radiator like most Japanese designs. Quicker warm up and more even overall water temps.

According to this, they went to the LZ4 in all applications in 07. No more LX9 past 06! So an 07 G6 with the LZ4 would be a great vehicle.

I love the site thetruthaboutcars.com

The writers there are brutally honest with the cars they review. They have no problem bashing domestic or foreign cars if they suck.

GM has had a higher rate of good ratings lately.

For instance....

2008 Chevy Malibu

2008 Chevy Tahoe

2008 Saturn Vue

etc....

I've been very proud of GM lately. They are building much higher quality stuff. If only they could fix their upper management issues!!

I know someone who works at a Chevy dealership (Service dept) and he said he has definitely noticed an increase in quality and reliability. He said the last 5 years have been the greatest change, especially in the last two years...less complaints like gaps in the dashboards, manuf. defects, rattling, bad sensors, poor ride quality, etc. As a result they are promoting fluid services more often to make up revenue.

He also mentioned GM finally listens to it's customers which the Japanese have been for years. GM makes small improvements in current generation cars, instead of waiting until the next model to come out.

I drive a Honda and a SAAB. Although SAAB is GM (for now), I don't really feel any loyalty to GM. But really, they have been doing a good job lately.

I'd drive just about any car in their fleet except for maybe the Impala. Even then, if the color was right with the V-8..... Really like the new Malibu....REALLY wish they'd renamed it, though. Despite the name, I've noticed two new ones with temp plates in my neighborhood in the last week. And I don't like to brag but I live in a fairly nice upper middle class neighborhood. Typically more Hondas, Yotas (and Lexus), Volvos, Audis and Mercs.

Of course, I do have a few white collar GM employees in the neighborhood...

my moms 04 G6 GT isn't the best car. Runs and drives pretty good, but gets no where near good fuel economy. Been stuck in the low 20s even on the highway. That three piece sunroof has been broken about 3-4 times. Occassionaly after she starts the car, the starter acts like it starts and stops and doesn't let the car start.

Other than that it's been fine.

well 2005 model year introduced in 2004

My $.02c is that everytime a new and updated domestic car comes around, eveyone gets their panties in a bunch. I say look at a 5-6 year-old example of a congurent product. That would bring us back to GranAm / GranPrix type vehicles to compare. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they are pretty miserable used cars. Same thing goes for whatever hot Chrysler or Ford product that comes along. They seem so great at first but turn out pretty sad in the end. I'd compare the G6 styling to an Accord of a gen or two ago.
