How reliable are 99 Mitsu Eclipse

I had a terrible time with an older Mits pickup I had. Bad enough that I would not even consider another Mits in my lifetime.

AC repairs on them are very expensive when the compressor fails. When it does it contaminates everything so it all must be replaced.

A/C system failures like that aren't unusual. Virtually every '89-'98 Thunderbird/Cougar we serviced needed a new condenser in addition to the usual compressor and drier. They were just packed full of junk and couldn't be flushed. A few evaporator cores too.

But the MightyMax/D50 had an idler arm that was made out of compressed garbage. I remember being amazed at how many people were just out driving those little trucks with steering that messed up.

It would have like a half turn of steering play and wander all over the place if you tried to drive it.

Mine was an 86 4x4 so it was 1 year before they went to the different body style and the Mighty max.

I had constant carb troubles, constant trans troubles, The mounts for the front differential broke which allowed the diff to hang by the cv axles and driveshaft, the rear spring hangers would flop forward, oil leaks, needed a valve job due to burned valves @ 35K, after that the rings went and the only way to start it was to put oil down the carb, the crankshaft broke @ 44k.

The carb caught on fire a few times , destroying the wiring, hoses and hood paint.

I put in another engine from a wreck and it did seem to run better. My dad double gasketed an oil filter so that was the end of that engine and the truck went to Pic A Part.

I'm sure that Mits is better now but I'm still gun shy about them.
