When you get a significant enough crack in your wndshiled, how quickly do you get it replaced? I usually do it within 2 weeks and NJ does not mandate glass coverage so it comes out of my pocket.

I ask because the windshield in my Forester cracked yesterday while cleaning snow from it (actually the defroster seems to have done the deed)and I got a ticket for it today. Just curious if anyone else thinks I should have had it repaired before 24 hours elapsed.

i got mine replaced next day last yr, and i said i had no idea how it happened, and my comprahensive covered it in full and no rate hike

I usually get it repaired asap. If it's reparable, then it behooves you to fix the crack before a full replacement is necessary. It'll need to be fixed anyway, so why not do it before NJ's finest nab you a second time (or is there is a decent time frame for the fix-it ticket?) Also, I've never heard of any one chipping their windshield while de-icing, but my experience is limited, so take it for what it's worth. Maybe try not to Chuck Norris your windshield next time! :P j/k

NJ cops, especially on the NJT, seem to be anal when it comes to front visibility - they'll pull you over for anything from a rear-view dangly to cracks to radar detectors (though radar detectors aren't illegal by themselves

pottymouth: how much was the "ticket"? And how much was the glass replacement?

I know the local scrap yard sells windshields quite reasonable ~$50 or so.....but I know it's the LABOR that is the killer...lol. Mounting it properly in place.

My 88 Dodge Aries has a "scratch" apparantly from when the previous owner used the wipers without blades.....so there's a scratch about the size of a dollar bill.....I don't know if it's need of repair, it's not "met" with the edge of the glass to the point where it'll break...and I can't even catch my nail on it. But I don't have Comprehensive coverage on this car, so from my understanding it'll be out of pocket if I do need it replaced.

I think the fine is $54. The crack is big enough that I would have replaced it, I just needed a chance to do so. This hapened yesterday and I had planned to call for a few prices this weekend.

There was a little chip, maybe the size of a poppy seed that was on the glass when I bought the car over 3 years ago. I wasn't actually scraping the windshield, I started the car and had the defroster running after clearing the snow off. I guess the thermal shock just overwhelmed a point of stress in the chip. Not the end of the world, it just irritates me that there is was no discretion used. A warning seems much more reasonable to me. Last time I got one replaced it was 4 days before Safelite could even get to me.

It is worthy of noting that while I sat there waiting for my ticket, I must have seen nealry a dozen people drive by with cellphones stuck to their ears. That is illegal in NJ and IMO, a much higher priority over a windshield cracked below the driver's line of sight. I should either get used to this or move out of this state already.

I was a target of opportunity. The cops pulled up next to me at a light in their Tahoe and the passenger must have just looked over and noticed it. The crack is below my line of sight and does not hinder my view of anything but maybe the windshiled washer nozzles.

I'll have to take the Chrysler for the rest of the week which is a shame. I often have to drive on unplowed roads and parking lots to get to some of the jobsites I go to. It sucks to have an AWD vehicle sitting in the driveway right now, but I guess I have to until next week.

I'm sure you handled it better than I would have. Sometimes, showing an officer the respect he/she deserves will earn you a warning vice a ticket, but not always (and not usually based on my experience.) I've only got one ticket on my record (another has been expunged) and one warning. The former I wasn't speeding, but was singled out and the latter I was speeding, but was honest and respectful - go figure.

How long do they give you to fix the windshield? I can't see how they'd hand you a ticket and expect it to be magically fixed the next day. Hopefully it's at least a couple of weeks, which means you'll be able to drive the Subie until then.
