How often do you change oils brands?

I'm a sucker for a great deal on oil (as are most here). As a result, my vehicles have had a diet of GTX, M1, Havoline, Pennzoil, and others over the last few years. I plan to continue this trend with the QS and Mobil Clean deal at Auto Zone. I've never done a UOA, I guess because I change brands so much. No matter how hard I try, I can't lose the idea of trying to stick with one brand of oil. On the other hand, if I stick with one brand, I might run out of my stash before I find it on sale again. That would be terrible. I guess there really is no point to this post, just seeing who else changes oil brands as often as underwear.

I just stick with Pennzoil dino and synth and have since ~1976 (yes, including the old PZL synth).

I did run some Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30 in the Lumina back in '04 for one OCI each, but went back to the old yellow bottle.

My family has been using the same brand of oil since 1946. I also drifted to try other synthetics, but came back to the brand. By the way, the old PZL synthetic "Performax" was probably one of the best synthetics ever made.

I got my Corvette in August 2004 and used nothing but GC 0w30 in it until this year and then I switched to PP 5w30. I'm gonna stick with PP for a long time in this car.

In my wife's Honda, I started out running Mobil 1 5w30 from Nov 99 up until Nov 2002, then I tried 3 intervals with Royal Purple. After that I ran GC 0w30 from Oct 2003 to Sept 2006. Since that point I've gone a little crazy and have used a different oil every oil change! I tried Syntec 5w30, GTX 5w20, Petro Canada 5w20 and am now running Canadian Tire 5w20 (which is actually Formula Shell)

I bought 5 different oils at OReilly (I use the term, "bought" loosely, because after the rebate, they were all FREE), and will use them one after the other in a Subaru. Obviously, I don't think it will hurt anything.

I used to use pennzoil as a teenager and early 20's simply because that's what dad used. Monkee see monkee do I guess. Then, a heard the infamous rumors about sludge and pennzoil and bought into them. I started using castrol for years after that. After joining and reading bitog I started using whatever cheap name brand oil I could put my hands on. I have kinda went back to using castrol gtx only in my gassers and rotella in my diesel. I think there is a little to be gained by staying with same oil. With all that being said, I have had zero ill effects from using pennzoil, changing brands or anything else for that matter. I have never played with changing visc. I always stayed with recommended weight.

I only use what is on sale and works well. But it is common for me to buy 200 qts on a good deal and then I am forced to stick with one brand. But 200 qts is a 2 year supply for me.

I tried lots but have settled on Amsoil. Now I just switch oils in the Amsoil family when the next new oil comes out.

Patman,
I just picked up an 89' C4 with 40,000 miles and was going to use GC 0W-30. The prior owner used Mobil 1 5-30. Any reason why you switched from GC to PP?

I typically will switch whenever I find something that works better. I had been using Mobil 1 for the past 4 years since it has always posted great numbers in Toyota engines. However, since they reformulated, I switched to Amsoil. I've also used Havoline for use with Auto-RX, but only for that purpose. I went back to Mobil 1 after the Auto-RX cycle was completed.

I try to pick a good one like PP or Mobil 1 and stick with it. I will do one UOA after the third oil change and if it is acceptable, I never change thereafter. Seems that when changing brands that it often takes two or more oil changes for the wear metals and oil usage to stabilize so it seems prudent o not change unless you suspect a problem. JMO Ed

I change almost every oil change depends on what is one sale. The Tribute gets free oil changes so I usually take it to the dealer so it gets the same most the time. I have usually tried to stick to Castrol or Penzoil though. Recently Mobil 1 is on my shelf though too, along with PP 5w20.

I was a big M1 fan before joining BITOG. Now I use and stock up on PP and "Q" TP when their BOGO.

I used to use only Mobil 1, but now I buy any synthetic that's on sale. Lately that has meant PP, next it will be the QS QHorsepower and QTorque 4X4 which I bought for a net price of $5/5 quarts ($20 - $15 rebate).

After running GC for so many years I got the itch to try something different, not that I was disappointed with GC in any way at all. I still think the original green formula GC is one of the best oils ever made. I don't think the new gold formula GC is quite as good as the green, although it's probably 9/10ths of the way there.

I get stuck with overstock oils from the hoarding process. If I end up with something different I want to use in my car, the remaining stuff gets bumped down into someone else's, mainly the wife's CRV. She's getting the Havoline Semi-Synth right now.

Keeping consistant with oil brands is not only noble, but a better way to service, imo. not that you can't change brands, but I don't think changing every time is good because of AW layers, etc.

If I had to pick a brand to stick with, Havoline would be it. Mostly what I find appealing about Havoline is their thinner formulations. I felt the Pennzoil I got on freebate ran nicely. I don't care for Mobil corporate, but end up using their oils often. That is basicly over, except for the M1 0w-30 I've stashed. I'm more of a Castrol guy in general. GTX HM and Syntec Blend are pretty nice products. I don't think plain Syntec is something I'd buy full price. Motorcraft is one I'd like to try, but a stash of others precludes that and they really don't have a very wide product range.

Always used Mobil 1 synthetic, then when I found BobIsTheOilguy, things changed

Tried RP,now I'm an Amsoil kinda guy :) If I was to use an group III oil, I'd use Havoline. My Dad uses it in all his vehicles and never had any problems, and when he tore them down, they were clean as [censored].
