How much would you pay for a horn?

The horn on my Jeep stopped working. I bought a replacement from the auto parts store but it can't be heard.

So I wandered up to the Local Jeep Stealer. After getting past the sales Hawks in the front I found my way to the parts dept.

I even brought my VIN# with me to make it easy for the parts guy.

I already had a price in my head. I figure it cost's Jeep about $4 to make the horn and get it shipped to the Stealer.

I also figured that they would quadroople the price. So I was "thinking" $20ish after tax.

My Jaw hit the floor when I was presented with a $92 quote for my horn! I though the guy was joking until he turned the computer around to where I could see it.

Be over $100 after tax! I said no thanks and left.

Off to Ebay now.

was going to say aftermarket Hella OR roam around the JY. Many people have told me older lincolns and caddys have LOUD horns.

I would pay a max of $40 for a Pair of OEM horns on a good day but on average i feel $25-30 is the sweet spot, maybe $50 for hella SUPER LOUD horns.

If you want to venture into automotive wiring I'd upgrade the horns with dual tones and a relay. Upgraded the wimpy single tone diaphragm horn on the 90 Toyota 4Runner with dual tone Fiamm horns and it sounds nice and loud.

Some modern cars some with wimpy horns that are a joke. The Smart car probably purposely put a scooter horn on their cars and the dual tone diaphram horns on my Silverado sounds a little bit weak.

jeeps don't get scrapped hete. I think they get turned into a rock crawler if wrecked. I wonder of a neon or minivan horn would work. I have zero electrical skills so adding a relay and stuff is out of my leage.

Make sure you don't have an integrated relay in the horn before you screw around with yours. Would hate to fry the airbag clock spring with an overcurrent.

A basic air horn from pep girls is around $25. Only flaw is they take 1/10 second to charge up pressure.

I dont think a relay would be necessary if the horns were salvaged from a similar era Chrysler product.

1996-2000 Caravans et al, are abundant in the junkyards and the horns have the common American A - F note sound.

if you want to get someone's attention with your horn (isn't that the point?) get the horns from an older caddy. very distinct, kinda dissonant tone.
actually a 4 note. there's a D,F,A,&C, but apparently the C is out of production, and if you buy new, they give you 2 A horns.

just search you tube for Cadillac Horn, and you'll find lots of vids where folks have put them on all sorts of cars.

My horn uses 2 wires and I riecently replaced my $300 clock spring. what does the two wires mean? I would understand a Hotwire leading to the horn then the horn being ground

I have about 1800 into the horn on my truck... Nathan airchime K5LA. Real train horn. 12 Gallons of air, I have a Electric Bell and other goodies.

Two wire set up grounds through the vehicle electrical system, verses the older one wire style that grounded directly to the chassis.
