i have a property rented by a family of 4. their water bill is always high for some reason. bill says they average 430 gallons per day water. google tells me that 80 to 100 gallons per person is normal. using our family as a basis, we use half of what they use.

So does 100 gallons per head sound right for water use per day?

When sizing my water softener last year, a lot of the companies use 75 gallons per person per day as the average. Numerous sites said that 50 to 70 gallons per person per day was easily achievable with low flow fixtures (shower, toilet, sinks, etc.). Bath tubs and washing machines can use a lot of water.

100 gallons a day between two of us, I would guess that's easily 75% my room mate. I hardly ever do dishes (I don't cook), I very rarely do laundry (maybe once a week) and I shower every-other day usually. It's not hard to conserve water when it's only one or two adults.

*EDIT* I just looked, my highest bill ever was 5 units, my lowest was 1. 3 on average. 748 gallons to a unit, according to the city.

400 gallons a day? Good lord I can only imagine how much that bill is! We averaged 138 gallons a day last month. I suspect most of that is my showers... I love a llllooonnngggg hot shower.

how many gallons per person ?

the bill was what made me take a second look. i took a pix of the meter and came back 3 hours later and it had hardly moved so it seems to rule out a leak

I'll bet that if they had to pay their water bill the usage would go down sharply.

Check the meter. Is it turning with no water running inside? Check for connections to other users.

Water is very expensive here.

Yep. Water is more expensive than electricity which is shocking considering how much rain we get and the snowpack in the mountains.

You are sure there is only a family of 4 there? They might be subletting bedspace out which is common here as well.

Just got my utility bill today. 2 people in my household, 29 days in my last billing cycle. We used 5 ccf units at 748 gallons per unit. That's what....3,740 gallons divided by 29 =.....129 gallons per day? Yes, they're using a lot of water! That 3,740 gallons cost $23.98.

2 pay, 2800 gallons per month, new HE washing machine, every month. I'd say we are NOT conservative with water. All shower heads have the guts ripped out, but toilets are are 1.28.

Summer is higher, we have a pool, wash cars and live in a free county in a free state.

December is generally 4500 gallons.

i forgot to add that the $900 is for 2 month as that is how it billed here . water sewer and garbage. having property in the city of Seattle is expensive

We are between 5000-7000 gallons a month with 2 adults and 2 teens (16 yr old girl, 13 yr old boy).
That works out to 41-58 gallons per person per day.
And I think we use too much water, I can't imagine doubling that.

$900 would pay my water, sewer and trash bill for a year and a half!

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has very high rates for water, sewer and garbage, but this sounds really high. I am in SE King County, therefore get SPU water wholesaled to my W&S District, then they add a fee to deliver it to me. Sewage leaving the house is the same thing; local district pumps it to the huge Metro sewer line, then Metro treats it. Garbage is a separate contract with Republic Services negotiated by the county. Just two people in my household, but last two months of water is 600 cf: $41.50 (double in summer); sewer (two flat rates): $127.50; garbage/recycle service/yard waste (smallest carts): $66.

Little kids would drive the water portion up, but in addition to leaks, I suggest looking at garbage cart size (or quantity) to see if you could drive that component down.
