I'm a cheap skate! My normal price is $2 a qt or less. Thats getting hard to do. Thinking that i should get with the times and up the price to $3/qt or less.

I only have 1 vehicle that takes synthetic. It gets shell 5w40. The rest get the cheap dino.

I still buy the $2/quart oil, but you have to be patient. Shield Choice (formerly TropArtic) goes on sale at the local Orscheln stores every couple of months for that price. Shell conventional occasionally goes on sale here at Menards for $2/quart. I've also purchased Peak at Dollar General for less than that. Of course, oil that goes on sale gets purchased in fairly large quantities.
It helps that I don't drive a car that requires Dexos.

The Walmart Havoline boxes are halfway between those numbers for the High Mileage and conventional. $1 difference between them for 6qts.

Interesting. I have never seen them. I prefer name brands but i often score the house brands at my price. Don't see name brands at that price often at all.

I'll second the Havoline Smart Change as the way to go. I just did two oil changes and used the 6 quart boxes for the first time. No muss, no fuss, no spillage. Did not have to keep track of 5 - 7 oil bottles/vehicle. You might have to order them from Walmart.com (I did since it's not normally stocked), but with free to store delivery, it's not a problem.

Conventional - $14.97/6qt - $2.50/qt
High Mileage (Blend) - $15.47/6qt - $2.58/qt

Full Syn - $19.99/6qt - $3.33/qt

IMO The high mileage at $.50 more a quart is a no-brainer. That's what I'll be putting in all 3 of mine next go round.

Using a more expensive oil such as synthetic (vs. dino), can cost less overall if considering factors like:
  • oci extension
  • filter cost (e.g. 2 vs 1)
  • time and material to change oil.

You don't say what grade "the rest' get but if you can run a 5w30 dino, Chevron Supreme 5w30 is a syn blend currently priced at $2.48 in the 5qt jug at Wally's.

Or, SuperTech 5w30 dino in both HiMi and regular are $2.73qt in the 5qt jug.

Then there's Havoline 5w30 in the 6qt box at $2.49qt full dino or $2.57 for the HiMi syn blend flavour.

Plenty of non rebate options in the $2~$3 price point.

5q Mobil 1 for $22.88 minus $12 rebate gets you just about to the $2/qt range you're looking for.
Recently it was $19.98 at Wally's.

Also, Dollar Tree frequently does BOGO on Peak conventional for $3.99/qt.

Well there is being cheap, similar is wanting value for your money, and being strapped for cash.

I might be cheap but I'm lazy too. I do like 8 oil changes a year, that's like 50 quarts. I guess if I paid $2/quart instead of $3/qt I could afford one more dinner out with the family on the savings. But that's about it. Not worth driving around to save that much, and I dislike rebate cards.

Why settle for dino when you can get full synthetic within your budget? I just bought four, five quart jugs of Mobil 1 European Car Formula for $22.88/jug. Mobil sent me a $12 rebate on each jug, for a net price of $10.88/jug, which makes it $2.18/qt.

Of course rebates are limited. Typically, only Mobil and Pennzoil offer rebates each year, so if you do a lot of oil changes, you may not be able to get rebates on all the oil you need. But for my 2 car household, the only motor oil I pay full price for is what goes in my mower and snow blower.

Right up your alley: this Labor Day Home Depot should be putting jugs of Formula Shell on sale for $9.97 in 5w30. 10w30 and 10w40. I wish they'd carry 5w-20.

Chris,

You have to consider how much of your time and effort and gas money you'll be using to get the oil at a price under $2 a quart.

I think you need to up your limit a bit, unless you want to be patient enough to try and get prices under $2 a quart or spend lots of time driving around.

If my memory serves me correct you live far away from anybody else. It probably costs you $1.50 in gas to drive out of your house to get somewhere to experience traffic.

LOL. I don't make a special trip just to buy oil.
