About a year ago I had my transmission so called "flushed" by my local Ford Dealer. Prior to this time, they never gave me any troubles of any kind. I purchased 2 1/2 gallons of Amsoil ATF and figured this should be enough for them to flush my transmission along with the torque converter. According to my manual, the transmission holds a total of 8.5 quarts. I got my truck back from the shop and found the 2.5 gallon jug to be still 3/4 full so that leaves me approximately 2 gallons of transmission fluid left. After arguing with the dealer they tried to reassure me that the torque converter was flushed and it even said so on the repair order worksheet. Anyway, that's another ballgame.

What I want to do is flush the transmission and torque converter myself using Method #3 from the Auto-rx website. As mentioned before, I have approx. 2 gallons of Amsoil ATF left and I need to know how much more fluid I need. I will keep using Amsoil ATF since I don't want to mix different brands of ATF in my transmission. So how much more fluid would you reccomend I purchase?? Thank you,,,,AR

I would do what you did the first time. I did my Chrysler minivan myself and it started clearing nicely at the spec capacity. But it's a 2 or 3 man job pouring in at the same rate of discharge while someone is ready at the ignition, and then a 3rd to avoid any spills on the discharge. It wasn't Amsoil, so I had the luxury of buying 2 gallons and then 3 spare quarts and then returned the unused quarts.

rg144,

I'm not sure I follow you clearly when you say "do what you did the first time" In the 2 years I've owned my Ranger, that was the first time the transmission ever saw a fluid change from the Ford Dealer. What are you saying?? Just asking for clarification is all,,,,,,AR

Method #3????
Just multiple 1.5 by the "total printed" ATF capacity in the owners manual. That'll cover a machine or 'pulled cooler hose' flush.

So, you gave the dealer 2.5 gallons (jug or quarts) of Amsoil, asked for a flush, and got 2 gallons back???? Smells fishy.
If jug, I hope that the 2 gallons you got back is Amsoil and not dealer bulk ATF!
If quarts, hope that the rest were 'sealed'.

Thanks unDummy,

I bought a 2.5 gallon jug right from Amsoil and asked the dealer to flush the torque converter along with a pan drain and filter change. Obviously they didn't do the flush and only did a pan drop and filter change. Apparently I got jipped even after arguing with them. If I may ask, how did you figure 1.5?? Just curious, not that I know something you don't. Simply curiousity,,,,,AR
