You're going to regret ditching cable in 5 years, according to analysts.

Ditching your cable subscription may feel liberating, but analysts say you could regret it in five years.

In a note to investors on Monday, Needham analysts warned that "consumers pay for everything in the end."

This means that features you love — like on-demand viewing, à la carte channels, and entire seasons available at once — are going to drive up costs.

This could make cord cutters yearn for the days of big bundles, the analysts say.

I cut the cord approximately 8-10 years ago, I didn't regret my decision at all.

I don't get his point. You can subscribe anytime. Not like its a limited amount and best thing, new subscribers always get the best deal. I used to play games with Dish and Direct just for the specials. It's crazy, the article makes no sense.

To look at it globally, since the infrastructure is in the hands of 2-3 players, when the revenues go down in a particular area, they raise the prices somewhere else. If cable subscription revenues go down, they will increase the cable internet cost.

So the size of the pie remains the same, just the size of the slices changes.

I have been cable free (at least Cable TV free, still get internet from them) since early 2008 with Windows Vista and now Windows 7 as my HTPC. I get plenty of channels OTA with DVR and with Netflix (until recently with MS screwing up the Netflix plugin for WMC) could watch most all shows I want.
I watch to much TV still, so why do I want to pay more for it?
I am sure I have saved several thousand since that time and am happy with that, don't miss them at all.

LOL, most of the program content is absolute garbage anyway!
Add to that even when there is something worthwhile on
the commercial time end up being at least 40% or more of the entire run time of the program.

I cut the cord in 2011 and haven't looked back.

You have the wrong view. It's not a fixed sized pie.

The big cable companies aren't saying to themselves "I only need to make $10B in profit, and I'm making enough in this area that we won't raise prices over there."

They are saying "How much can I raise prices in each market to make the most money." Their only limit is that a sudden price increase might cause more to drop traditional cable.

Absolutely. It makes no sense. First off, I feel their business model is dying, and they have their heads in the sand. Secondly, if I yank my satellite subscription and I turn out to be dead wrong, what's stopping me from going back?

I don't know any really young people that have gone out on their own and got cable or satellite. They get their internet, and that's about it. In my generation, almost everyone has cable or satellite, and always did. The writing is on the wall.

30 years ago there was talk of menu programming on cable. Cable has failed to lead and now adapt to the market. They were competing poorly with Netflix mail based with pay per view ten years ago. They just dont get it. If it wasn't for ESPN and fox news they would already be past tense.

Insightful analysis.

Almost like earning a MBA and Ph.D in economics for the price of a Yahoo subscription.

The only thing keeping cable alive is sports.

I have not had cable in years and every time I see it I remember why I dumped it. Crazy long commercial breaks and mind numbingly stupid programming.

Half of the [censored] they have on when I'm at the gym is so stupid that I'd have to be drunk to even be able to watch it. MTV specifically really seems to be dredging the bottom of the publics IQ.

Many people get their internet from their cell phone or other hot spot device.
They also sell Boxes that gets you free cable i can't use one of those because my wife won't let me...lol
Their websites say they are legal but im not so sure so if anyone decides to get one check the Law first and then decide.

Guess who owns the infrastructure behind the cell phone fiber or hot spots?
