Hey everybody. I have an 05 Chevy Malibu base model and I plan on doing a pan drop for it. I was curious if anybody can tell me how many quarts should be used to refill? I was planning on measuring the amount drained but would rather fill it in case some of it leaked out. Thanks in advance!

Should be;

Automatic Transmission, 4T45-E Initial Fill..........6.9 quarts
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
4 speed 4T45-E..........12.9 quarts

Bill

I can't tell you exact amount, but it is a bit under 8 qts. When I did mine (drop + filter change) I used two gallon jugs of Maxlife ATF and still had a tiny bit left over. This was also with some sputtering out of the check level hole after refilling and trying to follow proper check level procedure.

That is what I was curious about. How did you check it? Lift the vehicle and open the check plug while it is running?

I am going off memory, but the transmission is supposed to be warm, NOT hot (they state 104F). Car must be level. Start car, cycle through all positions of gear selector ending back in P.With car running: Remove plug and fluid should just dribble out. No fluid=level too low.

I had access to a lift so it was easier for me. Wouldn't want to do it with a car on stands, but it can be done.
